Rubber harvesters in Thailand rescued an abandoned baby girl Sunday in the woods after her mother allegedly left the infant there to die, according to local police.
The Express reports the baby girl was discovered naked with insects crawling on her skin and small cuts and bruises on her face in the Krabi province in southern Thailand.
Police said the baby girl is being treated at the hospital for dehydration, but she is expected to make a full recovery. They estimated that she had been abandoned for at least 24 hours and had spent the night in the woods.
According to the report, rubber harvesters from a local village found the infant laying on a banana leaf plant. They said she cried when they picked her up, and they quickly wrapped her in a blanket until police and an ambulance arrived.
Police Colonel Prasit Yodthong said police are looking for the mother, but they have not been successful yet. According to police, the local hospital did not report any recent births.

“It is likely that the mother gave birth elsewhere and abandoned the child in the middle of the hill,” Yodthong said. “The newborn girl had worms and insects crawling over her body.”
Police said the mother will be prosecuted when they find her.
“The baby could have died and we think that whoever left the girl knew this,” Yodthong said.
