Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers vetoed five pro-life bills Friday, blocking life-saving legislation that could save countless babies’ lives.

A pro-abortion Democrat, Evers repeatedly has vetoed pro-life legislation that would protect born and unborn babies and ensure that women receive information about alternatives to abortion and the support available to parents who choose life for their unborn babies.

The AP reports the bills that Evers vetoed Friday included legislation that would protect unborn babies from abortion discrimination based on their sex, race or a disability diagnosis such as Down syndrome.

“I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again today: As long as I’m governor, I will veto any legislation that turns back the clock on reproductive rights in this state — and that’s a promise,” the governor said in a statement Friday on Twitter.

All five pro-life bills passed the state legislature in October, and, while pro-life Republicans control both houses, they do not appear to have enough votes to meet the two-thirds majority required to override Evers’ vetoes.

On Friday, the governor vetoed the Shield the Vulnerable Act (Senate Bill 593) and the Woman’s Right to Know Act (Senate Bill 591), which would require abortionists to inform their patients of the life-saving abortion pill reversal procedure. The procedure has saved more than 2,500 babies’ lives thus far, but Evers suggested that informing women about the life-saving procedure is “unethical” in his veto message.

Previously, state Sen. Chris Kapenga, R-Delafield, the lead sponsor, said the Women’s Right to Know Act “empowers women” by ensuring that they receive basic information about their choices when seeking an abortion.

For the second time, Evers also vetoed a bill to ensure that babies who are born alive in botched abortions receive basic medical care. He vetoed a similar bill in 2019.

Other bills that met his veto pen were the Prenatal Diagnosis Information Act (Senate Bill 592), which would require doctors to provide educational resources and support to parents whose unborn babies test positive for congenital disorders, and legislation to defund Planned Parenthood and other abortion businesses of tax dollars through Medicaid, according to the report.

Evers is running for re-election in 2022.

Wisconsin Right to Life, the leading pro-life organization in the state, supports the pro-life legislation. Earlier this fall, it praised state lawmakers for prioritizing protections for mothers and babies.

“The heart of the pro-life movement is to value the life of all unborn children, and provide loving support to women as they chose life for their unborn children,” said Gracie Skogman, legislative director at Wisconsin Right to Life, earlier this fall. “Providing women with critical information and support when facing an unexpected pregnancy is an integral part of this mission.”

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported 6,372 abortions in 2019.
