A small group of abortion activists defiantly swallowed abortion pills Wednesday outside the U.S. Supreme Court as the justices considered a major abortion case that could overturn Roe v. Wade and allow states to protect unborn babies from abortion again.

The Daily Mail reports abortion activists with Shout Your Abortion took the abortion drugs in front of a huge banner that read “We are taking abortion pills” on Wednesday morning. They also brought a bag full of small white boxes labeled “abortion pills.”

Shout Your Abortion founder Amelia Bonow was one of the women who participated in the publicity stunt. A video showed the group shouting, “Forever! Abortion pills!” as Bonow and a few other women held pills and boxes of pills in their hands. After the women swallowed the pills, abortion activists around them cheered and clapped.

Shireen Rose Shakouri, deputy director of the pro-abortion group ReproAction, celebrated their act of defiance, writing on Twitter how she felt “honest to goodness chills as comrades” took the abortion pills.

It is not clear if any of the women were pregnant or if they were taking actual abortion drugs, such as mifepristone and misoprostol.

Abortion drugs are dangerous for women as well as their unborn babies, and dozens of women have diedRecent studies found huge increases in emergency room visits in the U.S. and United Kingdom after women took abortion drugs.

The Shout Your Abortion activists were part of a large crowd of pro-abortion and pro-life advocates outside the U.S. Supreme Court building on Wednesday morning. According to the Daily Mail, police monitored the opposing rallies and set up barriers in anticipation of possible tension.

Pro-life advocates hope and abortion activists fear the Supreme Court could overturn or modify Roe v. Wade in their ruling on a Mississippi abortion law. Pro-abortion group NARAL Pro-Choice America described the case as a “moment of crisis” and warned that abortion on demand is in “grave danger.”

“The constitutional right to abortion faces a terrifying and unprecedented threat. This moment of crisis is the culmination of the anti-choice movement’s decades-long efforts to undermine the will of the overwhelming majority of people in this country who support the legal right to abortion,” NARAL president Mini Timmaraju said in a statement.

For decades, under Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, states have been prohibited from banning abortions before viability. As a result, about 63 million unborn babies and hundreds, perhaps thousands, of mothers have died in supposedly “safe,” legal abortions. Now the Supreme Court has agreed to re-consider this precedent and decide “whether all pre-viability prohibitions on elective abortion are unconstitutional.”

The Mississippi law at the center of the case would ban abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, a point at which most Americans agree unborn babies should be protected under the law.

The court heard arguments in the case, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, on Wednesday morning. A ruling likely will be published in the spring or summer of 2022.
