30,000 Doctors Tell Supreme Court: Unborn Babies are Human Beings, They Deserve Human Rights

Tens of thousands of medical professionals are calling for restored legal protections for unborn babies as the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to hear a major abortion case on Dec. 1.

The message from the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, which represents more than 30,000 doctors and other medical professionals, is simple: Unborn babies are patients, too, and they deserve the same rights and protections as every other human being.

“In the nearly 50 years since the court wrongly decided Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, medical science has progressed significantly and has increasingly supported the pro-life position,” the medical alliance said in a statement earlier this month. “It is time that the law of our land caught up with advances in medical science and supported the human rights of all of our patients.”

According to the alliance, the science is clear that a distinct, living and whole human being comes into existence at the moment of conception, and an abortion ends the life of that human being.

“As physicians and other healthcare professionals, we know that when we care for pregnant women, we are caring for two distinct patients,” the alliance said.

Abortions are not health care; more than 90 percent of OB-GYNs do not even do them, it continued.

Abortions also can harm mothers, subjecting them to increased risks of future preterm births and mental health disorders, even death, the alliance continued. In the second trimester, the risks are even greater, it noted.

This is significant because the case before the Supreme Court centers around whether states may prohibit abortions in the second trimester. The 2018 Mississippi law at issue in the case would ban abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. However, legal precedent prohibits states from banning abortions before viability, which currently is about 22 weeks.

With the court case swiftly approaching, the alliance slammed abortion as “barbaric” and called on the medical community to put aside politics and boldly defend the rights of all patients, born and unborn.

“It is time for those of us in the medical profession to boldly defend the lives of all of our patients and demand that our preborn patients be protected and our pregnant patients be empowered instead of lied to,” the alliance said.

The Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine represents more than 30,000 physicians and other healthcare professionals who recognize that their duty is to protect and preserve the lives of all patients.

The alliance is made up of the Catholic Medical Association, the American Association of Pro-Life OB-GYNs, the Coptic Medical Association of North America, the Christian Medical & Dental Associations and the American College of Pediatricians.

Since 1973, nearly 63 million unborn babies have been killed legally in abortions under Roe v. Wade. The infamous ruling forces states to legalize abortions for any reason up to viability and allows abortions for any reason up to birth.
