Washington, D.C. Assistant Police Chief Chanel Dickerson accused her employer of pregnancy discrimination Tuesday, saying the department threatened to fire her if she did not abort her unborn baby.
FOX 4 reports Dickerson, one of several black female officers suing the department, made the accusation during a community meeting Tuesday at Unity Baptist Church in Northeast.
Dickerson said she was an 18-year-old police cadet when the department pressured her to have an abortion.
“… I was told I had to have an abortion or be fired from the MPD cadet program,” Dickerson said. “Wow. My choice to have a baby was personal, and it should’ve been mine alone and not for an employer ultimatum.”
It is not clear what happened to her unborn baby because “Dickerson shared that she never became a mother,” according to the report. Possibly, she succumbed to the pressure and had an abortion, suffered a miscarriage or made an adoption plan for her child; in any case, she was a mother.
In her speech, Dickerson accused the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department of discriminating against another mother, too.

“Fast forward from that time, I think about how my female colleagues, when I was promoted to sergeant,” she said, FOX 4 reports. “And it was another sergeant who was promoted with me and she needed a shift that was conducive to taking care of her child as a single mother. Unfortunately, she had to do things no woman should ever have to do to care for her child.”
Many women face pressure to abort their unborn babies, sometimes from employers and others from partners or parents. Frequently, coercion is coupled with abuse.
A 2014 study, “Associations Between Intimate Partner Violence and Termination of Pregnancy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis,” published in PLOS Medicine, found that intimate partner violence, including history of rape, sexual assault, contraception sabotage and coerced decision-making, was associated with abortion.
Another study by the Elliot Institute found a high rate of coerced and forced abortions among post-abortive women, as high as 64 percent.
