A mother and her unborn baby are dead after the baby’s father and a friend allegedly performed an illegal abortion in their dorm room earlier this month in Mubi, Nigeria.
According to Sahara Reporters, police arrested student Mumini Abubakar, of Sanda, after he allegedly attempted to help abort their unborn baby and then buried his girlfriend’s body in a shallow grave.
Police said they found the woman, Franca Elisha, buried along with her cell phone and an identification card. She was a student at the Federal Polytechnic in Mubi, according to the report.
GH Gossip reports Abubakar told police that he and his girlfriend both decided to abort the baby after learning that Franca was pregnant.

On Aug. 6, Abubakar allegedly took Franca to his dorm room where one of his friends, Huzaifa Shu’aibu, a student at the College of Health Technology, allegedly helped perform the abortion, the report states.
Police said Huzaifa injected Franca with an abortion drug, and she fainted. When she regained consciousness and began to feel better, he allegedly gave her a second dose of the drug; she passed out a second time and died a short time later, according to police.
The men waited until night and then buried her body, police said.
The young woman’s father, Elisha Iliya, of Sabon Gari, said he reported his daughter missing to police after she left for school on Aug. 6 and never came back.
“We searched everywhere as well as made contacts but to no avail,” Iliya said. “We decided to contact her friend and fellow student, who told us she last saw my daughter with Abubakar on the day she was killed while running to the hostel because it was raining. It was the girl who helped us to locate the whereabouts of Abubakar, to effect his arrest.”
When police found Abubakar, he was “playing football as if nothing happened,” Iliya continued.
Police said they arrested Abubakar and Huzaifa, and their investigation into the incident continues.
Legal or illegal, abortions always are dangerous, and sometimes they kill mothers as well as their unborn babies. Earlier this month, the Blackpool Gazette reported about another mother who died in England from a supposedly “safe, legal” abortion. Operation Rescue recently uncovered new evidence of another mother’s abortion death, Kenniah Malinda Epps, in California in 2014.

As of 2008, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control reported more than 400 women died from legal abortions in the United States, including 12 that year. Since then, nearly 50 more women have died, according to the most recent report from the CDC. However, the agency notes that the number is almost certainly an under-count because eight states do not report their numbers to the CDC.
