Democrats Want to Put Women’s Health in Jeopardy So More Babies are Killed in Abortions

Democrat lawmakers are ignoring concerns about women’s health risks, coercion, abuse and unborn babies’ lives as they push forward with plans to deregulate dangerous abortion drugs.

On Thursday, a group of Democrat leaders in the U.S. House introduced a resolution urging the Food and Drug Administration to get rid of a regulation requiring that the abortion drug mifepristone be provided to the woman in person by a medical professional, The Hill reports.

The Biden administration has not been enforcing the regulation since April, but Democrat leaders want it to be eliminated entirely.

“Mifepristone is extremely safe – the FDA’s own data confirms this,” said U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, a New York Democrat and sponsor of the resolution, in a statement.

However, Maloney did not mention that, under the Obama administration, the FDA stopped requiring that non-fatal complications from mifepristone be reported to the government.

She argued that America needs to “trust the science” that shows the abortion drug is safe.

Another resolution sponsor, California U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee claimed the FDA safety regulation actually make abortions less safe, according to The Hill.

“For people already experiencing health disparities — including people of color, people with lower incomes, and people in rural communities — the FDA’s restrictions often push access to medication abortion out of reach,” Lee said.

NBC News reports U.S. Reps. Diana DeGette of Colorado and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts also sponsored the resolution.

The abortion drug mifepristone, used up to 10 weeks of pregnancy, is not safe for mothers or babies. The risks can be even more dire if the mother does not see a doctor or have an ultrasound prior to taking the drug – something that would be allowed under the Democrats’ plan.

Even with the safety regulation, mifepristone has been responsible for millions of babies’ deaths and at least two dozen women’s deaths and thousands of serious complications.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists asserts that the abortion drug is very safe, with a complication rate of less than 1 percent. However, other medical groups point to studies showing the complication rate is likely much higher.

A 2009 study “Immediate Complications After Medical Compared With Surgical Termination of Pregnancy,” in Obstetrics and Gynecology found a complication rate of approximately 20 percent for the abortion drugs compared to 5.6 percent for surgical abortions. Hemorrhages and incomplete abortions were among the most common complications.

Another study, published in “Issues in Law & Medicine” in January, found “glaring deficiencies” in reports documenting complications from the abortion drug in the U.S. The most common complications included a failed abortion, an incomplete abortion (meaning part of the unborn baby or placenta remained in the womb), infection and a missed ectopic pregnancy, according to the research.

Pro-lifers also are concerned that the Democrats’ plan will lead to more coercion and abuse toward pregnant mothers and their babies. LifeNews has documented numerous stories of women who were forced or coerced into aborting their unborn babies or abused because they refused to do so, and research has found high rates of coercion and abuse among women who have abortions.

In one recent case, a Wisconsin man was accused of buying abortion drugs online and slipping them into his pregnant girlfriend’s drink after she refused to have an abortion.
