It has been 16 years since Spring aborted her unborn baby, and she still thinks about her child every day.

Speaking with Live Action News, the Florida mother said she struggled for a long time with her abortion decision and attempted suicide three times. Then she found healing and forgiveness in Christ.

Spring aborted her unborn baby in 2005 while she was in an abusive relationship. Single and just 23, she said she knew abortion was wrong, but her boyfriend kept pressuring her.

“I was afraid, and I felt like I had no other choice,” she said.

At the abortion facility, Spring said the staff was “very cold” and did not provide much counseling. They did not show Spring her unborn baby’s ultrasound image either; after the abortion, she found it stuck in her file, according to the report.

“When I was waiting for the doctor to come in the room, all I wanted was to run out. I remember feeling paralyzed and unable to stop my tears,” she told Live Action. “When the nurse came into the room, she told me I needed to be quiet and still, so I wouldn’t disturb any of the other ladies in nearby rooms.”

Spring said the abortion was so painful that she cried out, and the nurse scolded her again. Afterward, she said she had to be walked out to the car because she could not stand on her own.

“Life after the abortion was awful. I had instant remorse, guilt and shame,” she continued. “I had a very difficult time functioning in everyday life. I had nightmares about the experience regularly. I fell into an extreme depression, and I was suicidal.”

Binge eating and promiscuity did not dull the pain, and Spring attempted suicide three times, according to the report. Suicide, eating disorders, substance abuse and depression are common after abortions. One study in the “British Medical Journal” found a suicide rate nearly six times higher among women who had abortions compared to women who gave birth. Other research also has linked abortion to an increased risk of mental health problems.

At the time, Spring said she was angry at God for keeping her alive. Now, she is grateful.

“I am extremely grateful that God saved my life from my suicide attempts. I was angry at first because I didn’t fee like I deserved to live,” she said.

Spring eventually found forgiveness and healing in Christ through a post-abortion healing retreat and abortion recovery classes. She said the programs helped her more than basic counseling did.

Today, Spring is a single mother of two. Though 16 years have gone by since her abortion, she said she still thinks about her baby, Amariah Grace.

“Even though I am a single mom of two kids, there is a piece of my heart that will always long for the baby I never met,” she said. “I am now so grateful for the love and forgiveness I have received from Jesus and the life he has given me.”
