Last week, 28 Ohio legislators signed amicus or “friend of the court” briefs urging the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. These briefs are in response to the upcoming hearings on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the first abortion case the Supreme Court has agreed to take up since the confirmation of Justice Amy Coney Barrett.

“Ohio Right to Life is proud of our pro-life legislators who took a stand against the outdated and unjust precedent of Roe,” says Mike Gonidakis, President of Ohio Right to Life. “The scientific advancements of the last 47 years have only revealed further the humanity of the unborn and just how egregious the ruling in Roe is. It’s time for the issue of abortion to be handed back to the states.”

By taking up Dobbs, the Supreme Court has agreed to weigh in on the constitutionality of all pre-viability prohibitions on abortions, a question which strikes at the heart of the precedent of Roe v. WadeDobbs brings into question Mississippi’s 15 week abortion ban which bans nearly all abortions in Mississippi after 15 weeks.  At 15 weeks, an unborn baby can move all of her limbs, sense light, hiccup and suck her thumb. Recent scientific studies indicate that unborn babies may be able to feel pain as early as 12 weeks.

“In the last decade, over 500 pro-life protections have been enacted across our nation, with 27 of those occurring in Ohio,” says Gonidakis. “The tide of our nation is clearly turning towards life and Ohio is a proudly pro-life state. It’s time for the Supreme Court to uphold the constitution and strike down a ruling that goes directly against every American’s most fundamental right: the right to life.”

Ohio Right to Life will continue to advocate for the overturning of Roe and the end of abortion. ORTL’s Human Life Protection Act, which would end abortion in Ohio when Roe is overturned, remains the organization’s top priority heading into the fall legislative session.
