Members of Congress today introduced new federal legislation that would revoke taxpayer funding for federally-funded colleges and universities that distribute the dangerous abortion pill on campus, encouraging students to end the lives of their unborn babies.

The Protecting Life on College Campus Act of 2021was introduced today at a press conference on Capitol Hill by pro-life groups and lawmakers, including lead sponsors Senator Steve Daines (Mont.) and Representatives Mary Miller (Ill.) and Chip Roy (Texas).

The legislation would prohibit taxpayer funding of “any institution of higher education that hosts or is affiliated with any school-based service site that provides abortion drugs or abortions to students of the institution or to employees of the institution or site.” To maintain funding, colleges and universities would be required to send an annual report to the Departments of Education and of Health and Human Services, “certifying that no such site provides abortion drugs or abortions” to students or employees.

The measure already has the endorsement of 50 members of Congress and pro-life groups will be lobbying other members of the House and Senate to join them.

The issue is timely as California will require student health centers to provide Chemical Abortion Pills by 2023, an effort that the bill sponsor pushed as a beta test for other states. Already state legislators in New York and Massachusetts have legislation at play to follow suit.

Students for Life Action President Kristan Hawkins told LifeNews today that the pro-life bill is needed to prevent college and universities campuses from being conscripted into business with Corporate Abortion.”

She observed, “We found that the schools in California were not excited to take on this liability – the risk of death, injury and infertility that can result from the pills, and the lawsuit potential they would create. We raised concerns about health risks for fellow students and university staff from blood and tissue in the dorms. We noted that Corporate Abortion has located abortion vendors close to college campuses across the state.”

“In fact,pro-choice Gov. Jerry Brown used one of our talking points when he vetoed the second attempt to force all California colleges and universities to provide life-ending drugs on campuses, noting, “(b)ecause the services required … are widely available off-campus, this bill is not necessary. We discussed the horrors of painful episodes of bleeding that can lead even to the deaths of women, now callously sent back to the dorms if the abortion lobby gets its way, abandoning young women to life and death tragedy between classes. That’s no way to prepare students for hope and a future,” hawkins added.

SBA List, Charlotte Lozier Institute, Family Research Council, March for Life, and the Family Policy Alliance are also supporting the new bill.

Marilyn Musgrave, a former congresswoman and SBA List official, told LifeNews the bill is important.

“We are thankful to Rep. Chip Roy for introducing this bill to protect young women and girls from gruesome chemical abortions. The Protecting Life on College Campus Act will stop the flow of taxpayer money to universities that endanger their students by distributing unsafe drugs that could result in severe bleeding, intense pain, infection, physical and emotional trauma, and even death in some cases. As the Biden administration strips away commonsense regulations on chemical abortion, legislators across the country are fighting back by advancing laws to safeguard moms and babies in their states. We strongly support this bill and will never stop working to expose the brutality of abortion,” she explained.
