Byron York began his column today in the Washington Examiner with this declaration:
President Joe Biden took the oath of office six months ago today. Those six months may end up being the high-water mark of his presidency
York is not saying that President Biden’s willingness to abandon the Hyde Amendment after decades of support is the sole, or even that it is the primary reason this disaster of an administration is already floundering. In an otherwise insightful column, York doesn’t mention abortion or the Hyde Amendment which prevents almost all federal dollars from paying for elective abortions.
But Ed Morrissey does in a column headlined “Anyone else Dems running away from their party?”
Among the many out-of-the-mainstream proposals is (in Morrissey’s words) “torpedoing the highly popular Hyde Amendment.”
The monomaniacal determination of the pro-abortion Biden-Harris administration, in conjunction with the pro-abortion congressional Democrat leadership, to axe a proposal that has enjoyed bipartisan support for 40+ years is symbolic of a party that has completely lost its way. It helps also to explain why Biden’s approval ratings is “just over 52 percent in the RealClearPolitics average of polls.”
Think for a moment what that number would be if President Biden did not have the cozy relationship he enjoys with almost the entire media establishment. Imagine what his approval rating would be if he was criticized 24/7 as his predecessor was.
Take all of this in the context of what is becoming impossible to ignore. With the first mid-term referendum on Biden’s and congressional Democrats’ leadership just 15 months away, you can almost smell the fear.

Insistence on killing the Hyde amendment—which enjoys strong public support and has for many decades—is truly representative of a Democrat Party which is so ideological bound to abortion it cannot see that its extremist message resonates with only a sliver of the American people.
