Millions of unborn babies have been killed in abortions in the past decade alone, making abortion “the greatest evil in our day,” a Catholic priest told pro-life advocates over the weekend in Philadelphia.
Catholic Philly reports Father Dennis Gill urged people to pray and keep working to defend life during the Freedom for the Pre-Born rally July 17 in downtown Philadelphia. The Pro-Life Union of Greater Philadelphia organized the event.
Abortion is “the greatest evil in our day and in any day” because it is “a total denial of who God is and what He has done for us in making us and in giving us the responsibility we have over life,” Gill said during a Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul at the beginning of the rally.
Since 1973, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Roe v. Wade, about 63 million unborn babies have been killed in abortions, according to the National Right to Life Committee. Though abortion rates have been dropping in recent years, thanks to pro-life efforts, nearly 1 million unborn babies still are killed in abortions annually in the U.S.
Each abortion destroys an irreplaceable, unique, living human being who Christians believe is made in the image of God.
Gill told Christians to keep praying “in the face of darkness and evil” and “stop pretending that what is out there is not dark and evil.” He also urged people to examine themselves and commit to a “daily personal conversion from sin,” according to the report.

“We need to live exemplary lives as Christians, and with the help of Mary, the first disciple, to know that it’s possible to individually live how Christ wants us to live,” Gill said. “This makes our prayer all the more fruitful and powerful.”
He encouraged pro-lifers to do “spontaneous good works” to “show that our conversion is real” and to demonstrate “what God wants for his people,” the report states.
Abortion is the number one killer of human life in America, and it is entirely preventable. Abortion is the unnecessary, intentional destruction of an unborn child’s life before birth.
Across the country, pro-life advocates are doing good works to save babies from abortion and support their parents. Some states are passing laws to include unborn babies in child tax credit programs, others are budgeting money to provide additional pregnancy and parenting support to families in need.
Sidewalk counselors are providing information and encouragement to mothers right before they walk into an abortion facility. And pregnancy centers, maternity homes and adoption agencies are serving millions of people each year, offering everything from diapers and temporary shelter to parenting classes and support groups to help spare babies and mothers from the pain and death of abortion.
