Police in India arrested four people Monday for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl and then covering up the abuse by forcing her to take abortion drugs after she became pregnant.

News 18 reports authorities learned of the abuse allegations over the weekend after the girl suffered complications from the abortion drugs.

Srinagar Police in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India said the 13-year-old girl was gang raped four months ago by four men, according to Outlook India.

When the girl became pregnant, police said an accredited social health activist (Asha) worked with the alleged rapists to obtain abortion drugs to abort the girl’s unborn baby and cover up their crime.

Reports identified the accused rapists as B.P. Singh, Ram Babu Singh, Raghu Raikwar and Shatrughan Singh and the accused Asha health worker as Sushila. Police said they are still looking for a fifth person allegedly involved in the abuse.

Abortions and abuse frequently are connected. LifeNews has reported numerous stories where sexual abuse victims, including human trafficking victims, were pressured or forced into aborting their unborn babies by abusers.

Abortions are a tool used by abusers to cover up their crimes and continue abusing their victims. Abortion facilities also have been caught failing to report suspected abuse to authorities on numerous occasions.

Women and girls frequently are forced or coerced to abort their unborn babies. As LifeNews previously reported, one study found that 64 percent of post-abortive women said they felt pressure to have the abortion. LifeNews also has been keeping track of reports involving allegations of forced and coerced abortions, as well as abuse connected with women who refuse to abort their unborn babies.
