EU Politicians Want to Make Killing Babies in Abortions a Human Right

The European Union is scheduled to vote Wednesday on a radical pro-abortion document that would pressure countries to legalize the killing of unborn babies in abortions without limits up to birth and force medical workers to participate.

National Catholic Register reports pro-life and religious leaders are raising the alarm about the Matić Report and its goal to recognize the “right to abortion” in international law.

Introduced by Croatian MEP Perdrag Matić, the report urges European Union members to “remove all legal, policy, financial and other barriers impeding full access to [sexual and reproductive health and rights] for all persons,” including abortion.

Though not enforceable legislation, the report outlines a series of goals that would influence future policies and legislation in Europe, said Grégor Puppinck, general director of the European Centre for Law and Justice.

“It is about saying that abortion is a health treatment, that all those who are against that are against human rights and that therefore, member states should fight statements opposing abortion,” Puppinck told the Register.

The report not only advocates for the killing of unborn babies in abortions without limits, it also rejects conscience protections for medical workers who oppose abortion, he said.

Puppinck said he believes the billion-dollar abortion chain Planned Parenthood is behind the report.

“No member of the Parliament would have been able to write this resolution, it is clear that it was written by abortion professionals,” he told the news outlet. “Abortion is an industry that generates a lot of money worldwide, and this business now presents itself as a promoter of human and women rights while doing its own promotion, asking for European subsidies and spreading their practice.”

He said the EU very well may approve the report on Wednesday, but all hope is not lost. Puppinck said even several moderate MEPs have expressed concerns that the report attacks conscience protections and advocates for late-term abortions – both of which are widely unpopular among the general public.

European Catholic bishops also have been speaking out against the report.

Last week, Vatican News reported about a new position paper from the Secretariat of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) that outlined numerous problems.

While the bishops welcomed the “fundamental concern” to “protect the health and rights of women,” they said abortion is not “ordinary health care” or “a means of family planning.”

Unborn babies have a “human right to life” because they are “an independent life created in the image of God,” the bishops said in the position paper.

“A medical intervention of such magnitude cannot and must not become a normal practice,” the paper states.

The COMECE report also raised serious concerns that the Matić Report denies “the fundamental right to conscientious objection,” a freedom included in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, according to Vatican News.

Additionally, the report would discourage states from making individual decisions about health policy and medical care, the bishops’ organization said.

Though abortion activists have become increasingly bold in pushing their radical pro-abortion agenda, the report is unprecedented. A document published on the European Centre for Law and Justice website notes that “no treaty in international law recognizes a right to abortion nor includes it in the field of sexual and reproductive health,” according to the Register.

If the European Union votes in favor of the Matić Report, that could change, and European countries, most of which limit abortions after the first trimester, would face pressure to enact new laws allowing unborn babies to be aborted for any reason up to birth.
