Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison expressed serious concerns Tuesday about the U.S. Supreme Court decision to hear a major abortion case out of Mississippi.
In a statement, Harrison claimed that killing unborn babies in abortions is a “fundamental freedom” that should not be restricted.
“Abortion is health care,” Harrison said. “Democrats believe, like the majority of Americans, that our fundamental freedom to make personal decisions about if, when, and how to start or grow a family must remain protected.”
On Monday, the Supreme Court agreed to hear the case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which challenges a Mississippi law that bans abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The justices will consider the question of “whether all pre-viability prohibitions on elective abortion are unconstitutional.”
Many believe the case is a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade and could overturn it.

Because of Roe, more than 62 million unborn babies have been aborted in the U.S. The ruling forces states to legalize the killing of unborn babies in abortions without restriction all the way up to viability, though some states allow abortions up to birth. The U.S. is one of only seven countries in the world that allows elective abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
Though polls consistently show that most Americans support strong limits on abortion, especially after the first trimester, Democratic Party leaders do not.
Harrison described Mississippi’s attempt to protect unborn babies from abortion after 15 weeks as an “attack” on “reproductive health care.”
He expressed concern that the Supreme Court may allow states to limit or ban abortions and promised that Democrat leaders will fight to keep abortion on demand legal and easily accessible.
“Protecting and advancing reproductive health, rights and justice is the right course, and Democrats are committed to ensuring every American can count on the health care they need and deserve, when they need it,” Harrison said.
Many Americans, including many Democrat voters, do not support such an extreme stance. Democrats for Life of America, a voice for millions of pro-life Democrats, said Monday that abortion is violence, not health care, and the Supreme Court should empower states to protect babies in the womb.
“DFLA hopes that the Supreme Court will empower states to further protect pre-born children from the violence of abortion and weaken or overturn the terrible and unjust Roe v. Wade decision, which has caused over 60 million deaths since 1973,” the organization said in a statement. “If the Supreme Court upholds Mississippi’s law, it would be a major step forward in advancing the human rights of pre-born children.”
If the Supreme Court gets rid of the current precedent prohibiting the restriction of abortion prior to viability, abortion activists predict that half of the United States may protect unborn babies by banning all or almost all abortions. The Supreme Court has a 6-3 conservative majority, and pro-lifers hope the justices will allow states to protect unborn babies’ rights for the first time in decades.
