Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin recently shared with a Texas crowd about the joys and struggles of raising a child with Down syndrome.

Speaking at a banquet in April for A Woman’s Haven Pregnancy Crisis Center in San Antonio, Texas, Palin said her son Trig, who has Down syndrome, is her greatest gift, according to Texas GOP Voter blogger Sonja Harris.

“Every innocent life is worthy of protection,” Palin told the crowd.

And she mourned how radical the American government is about abortion – so radical that states are fighting in court right now for the ability to protect unborn babies with Down syndrome like Trig from discrimination.

“We need to send this message to Washington that every life is valuable, every life is precious,” Palin said. Quoting Mother Teresa, she continued: “Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching the people to love but to use in violence to get what they want. That is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion.”

Palin said the pro-abortion mindset also discriminates against women by telling them that they are not smart enough or capable enough to succeed without aborting their own children, according to Harris’s blog.

“All this is fake feminism!” Palin said. “What they are really telling women is, you’re victims. Hey, women, you can’t go to school or have a job and a career and … have a baby. So you have to kill your baby in order to do all those other things. Talk about disempowering women and making women feel like victims.”

She praised the pro-life pregnancy center for supporting and empowering women even when it is difficult.

“It is not the easy path but it is the right path. We need to ramp it up, though, and we need to send a message to women that they are strong enough and smart enough and are capable to take all that life has to offer and carry a baby, too,” she continued. “And let women know that if motherhood isn’t possible that adoption is that beautiful option.”

Palin encouraged pro-lifers to keep working together to build a culture of life in America because women and children need them.

“I went through it, I lived it,” she said. “God told me I was going be walking the walk and if it were not for the pro-life messages in a tangible way to hold on to, … my life would have turned out differently.

“So I thank you so much for all that you do. Please don’t be afraid. Nothing worthwhile is ever easy. And if you have a chance to choose between staying in a comfort zone or doing that scary thing. Choose the scary thing. That’s how you grow. Choose the scary thing,” she said.

A Woman’s Haven Pregnancy Crisis Center serves more than 3,000 pregnant and parenting mothers each year in the San Antonio area. It is one of more than 2,000 pregnancy centers across the U.S., which provide free services to more than 2 million pregnant and parenting mothers every year.
