A 17-year-old mother chose life for her unborn baby this spring thanks to the dedicated outreach of pro-life volunteers on the sidewalks of San Diego.

A sidewalk counselor with Helpers of God’s Precious Infants San Diego shared the story this week at California Catholic Daily and asked pro-lifers to pray for the young woman.

“Please pray for this young woman to continue to have the strength and resolve to give life to her unborn baby,” the ministry asked.

The sidewalk counselor said he noticed the young woman one day as she was pushing her 9-month-old baby in a stroller, heading for the nearby abortion facility. He said he offered her materials with information about abortion risks and showed her images of unborn babies at six and 12 weeks.

“She immediately began to tear up …” the pro-life counselor said. “The girl did not know how far along she was, but it was early in the pregnancy.”

He began to encourage her and ask if she had any support from family or the baby’s father. The young woman said her boyfriend did not want her to have an abortion, and her mother would support her no matter what she decided, according to the report.

Then, the counselor said he asked her to think about how an abortion would affect her and her unborn baby. When she told him that she did not think the abortion pill was “really” an abortion yet, he explained how abortion drugs work and how developed an unborn baby already is by six weeks of pregnancy.

Around six weeks, an unborn baby’s heartbeat is detectable outside the womb. According to the Endowment for Human Development, all four chambers of the heart are present, and the unborn baby’s brain and spinal cord are developing. Even though the unborn baby is only about ¼ inch long, he or she is beginning to look like a baby with arms and legs, a chest and head.

The pro-life volunteer also offered the young woman information about the resources available at local pregnancy resource centers and reminded her that her family promised to support her, too.

He also reminded her of the love that she already showed for her 9-month-old baby who she was pushing in the stroller.

“I know how much you must love your baby,” the sidewalk counselor said. “You will love the baby inside you just as much, you just haven’t met him yet. I know you couldn’t imagine anything bad happening to your young child. Don’t let them hurt the baby inside you.”

After he promised to pray for her, the young woman went into the abortion facility, hoping to take a pregnancy test and determine how far along she was, according to the report.

When she came out, the counselor said she approached him and told him that she decided not to go through with the abortion.

Sidewalk counselors provide a last ray of hope for mothers before they make a final decision about aborting their unborn babies. They stand outside abortion facilities in the heat and rain, wind and snow, offering words of compassion and hope to mothers and fathers as well as resources to help them and their babies.
