Authorities in Michigan arrested a man this week for allegedly raping an underage girl repeatedly and then choking her until she blacked out when she resisted his pressure to have an abortion.
MLive reports Anfernique N. Martin, 21, of Saginaw, allegedly physically and sexually assaulted the girl multiple times in 2020.
The girl’s name and age are not included in reports, but authorities said she was a minor and the charges against Martin indicate that she was between the ages of 13 and 15. It also is not clear if she aborted her unborn baby.
Authorities said the girl became pregnant in 2020 after Martin sexually assaulted her multiple times; then, he allegedly began pressuring her repeatedly to get an abortion.
On Oct. 9, police said Martin choked the girl until she went unconscious in a vehicle at a gas station in Saginaw. According to the report, he allegedly assaulted her because she had resisted his demands to abort her unborn baby.
Police said they arrested Martin on April 26. He is facing multiple sexual misconduct and assault charges, as well as a charge of assault with intent to coerce abortion, according to the local news.
Abortions frequently are coupled with coercion and abuse. As LifeNews previously reported, one study found that 64 percent of post-abortive women said they felt pressure to have the abortion.
Several studies also have linked domestic violence to abortion. In these cases, some women were forced or pressured by partners into having abortions, while others believed having an abortion would help them escape abuse. A 2011 study in the journal “Obstetrician and Gynaecologist” found that almost 40 percent of the women seeking abortions had a history of physical abuse and relationship issues.
