A pro-life student group’s display at the University of Texas at Austin was vandalized last week, less than 12 hours after they set up 1,000 tiny pink flags in remembrance of babies killed in abortions.

The College Fix reports students with the UT Austin Young Conservatives of Texas set up the Memorial for the Innocent display on March 23 on the college lawn. The display included 1,000 pink flags, each representing more than 800 babies who are aborted in the U.S. each year. It also included signs with information about an unborn baby’s development and abortion facts.

Less than 12 hours later, someone destroyed the memorial, removing all the flags and signs, according to the report. Club members told local news station KVUE that they identified several possible suspects, including someone who posted a comment on Reddit admitting to removing the flags.

“It is a sad day for the state of higher education when liberal students feel that they are free to vandalize the peaceful demonstrations of conservative students,” said Ariana Silva, a vice chair of the pro-life group. “This behavior is abhorrent and should be unthinkable.”

The Young Conservatives of Texas club said they wanted the display to be a sign of their support for laws that protect unborn babies.

“This memorial was intended to send a message to the Texas Legislature, that we, the younger generation, venerate life from conception to natural death and will not stop praying and remembering the slain unborn until this barbaric practice is abolished,” the club said in a statement.

In a statement to the Daily Wire, a university spokesperson said they did not receive any reports about the vandalism, but they encourage students to report concerns to the Dean’s Office.

“The university strongly defends freedom of expression and has content-neutral processes protecting free speech activities,” university spokesperson J.B. Bird told The Daily Wire. “Outdoor areas are open to the public, and free speech activities, such as demonstrations, do not require university approval. Students and student organizations can apply through the Dean of Students’ Office to put up outdoor displays and exhibits.”

Often, pro-lifers are targets of harassment, threats and violence just because of their advocacy for unborn babies. Last week, a Christian billboard in Mississippi also was vandalized with pro-abortion graffiti.

LifeNews.com recorded nearly 200 incidents targeting pro-lifers in 2019 and 2020, including a bomb threat during a 40 Days for Life event in Minnesotathe brutal attack of an older pro-life man outside an abortion facility in San Franciscoa pro-life banner set on fire inside a Western Washington University building, and a man charged with pulling a gun on pro-lifers outside a Delaware abortion facility.
