The photo says it all. The still image captures a little girl, sporting pink-framed eyeglasses and a ladybug-emblazoned jumper. She carries a sign which reads, “Down Syndrome is a Life Worth Living.”

The captivating picture appears on Pennsylvania state Senator Scott Martin’s website. It’s one of the images that accompanies a news release about the Senator’s introduction of a resolution honoring March 21st as World Down Syndrome Day.

The resolution would add Pennsylvania to the sizeable number of states and countries that recognize March 21st as a date set aside to promote greater inclusion for people with an extra chromosome.

“Individuals with Down syndrome have gone on to accomplish amazing things, including working as fashion designers, accomplished musicians, teachers, leaders of nonprofits, small business entrepreneurs and much more,” the Senator said.

For instance, there is Chloe Kondrich, a teenager who has become something of a goodwill ambassador for people with Down syndrome. Chloe has had her photo displayed on the big screen in Times Square numerous times. She has also taken part in a White House ceremony and spoken at the United Nations.

The long-term prognosis for individuals with Down syndrome is better than ever. Life expectancy now tops 60 years, allowing such individuals to contribute greatly to their workplaces, families, and communities.

As Senator Martin states, “New therapies and educational supports help individuals with Down syndrome adapt and thrive. Our society is richer and more vibrant because they are here with us.”
