Lewis Cowen’s life definitely was unplanned. But today, his parents celebrate their son’s life as an unexpected “miracle.”

Claire and David Cowen, of Penicuik, Scotland, said Lewis not only was conceived while they were using birth control but he also survived despite a high risk of miscarriage, Yahoo News reports.

“All the stories I could find were about women losing babies when they fell pregnant with the coil,” Claire said. “It didn’t fill me with hope but I remained positive and Lewis arrived safely. He’s my little miracle.”

Claire said she and her husband were using an IUD coil for about three years when she suddenly stopped getting her period. In March 2019, she said she took a pregnancy test and learned she was pregnant, Edinburgh News reports.

“I was sent to pregnancy support and offered an abortion but the baby was healthy so I wasn’t keen on the idea,” she remembered. “We didn’t plan to have more children but we were excited when we found out.”

Her doctors informed her that they could not remove the coil without risking Lewis’s life, but leaving it in also posed risks to their unborn son. According to the report, the IUD increases the risk of miscarriage and premature birth.

“It was the most stressful, scary few months of my life,” Claire said. “We had no idea how it would go or if my little boy would survive.”

In November 2019, the family’s fears turned to joy when Lewis was born healthy at 39 weeks of pregnancy, the report states. He weighed 6 pounds, 3 ounces, and, much to their surprise, was born with the contraceptive coil.

“Straight after he arrived the nurse spotted the coil stuck in the placenta – it was quite a shocking sight,” his mother remembered.

Claire said she hopes Lewis’s story will give other mothers hope if they also become pregnant on the coil.

“I want to share a positive story to show women it is possible for there to be a happy ending when an unexpected pregnancy happens on the coil,” she said.

All too often women are advised to abort their unborn babies if there is a problem. Some doctors even recommend aborting the baby because of the risk that he or she may die anyway, sending the message that it is better to kill a baby than give him or her a chance to live.

Stories like Claire’s and Lewis’s and so many others demonstrate that abortion is not the answer. Every baby deserves a chance to live.
