Nikki Haley: U.S. Should Boycott 2022 Winter Olympics in China Because It Commits Genocide

Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley says the United States should boycott the 2022 Witner Olympics in China because the communist nation commits genocide. China has come under fire for decades for its population control policies that include forced abortions and sterilizations and it has widened that practice further as it targets minority populations within its borders.

The United States should not glorify a country that is committing genocide against its own people and threatening the world. That’s why I am calling for a U.S. boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in China,” Haley tweeted this morning.

The pro-life former governor of South Carolina also wrote an op-ed at Fox News explaining her call for a boycott further:

If the United States had known what Nazi Germany would become, would we have participated in the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics? This is not a historical head-scratcher. The answer bears directly on next year’s Winter Olympics in Communist China.

The United States should boycott Beijing 2022 given China’s threats abroad and tyranny at home.

Communist China is more obviously dangerous today than Nazi Germany was in 1936. Then, the United States and the free world were not yet completely convinced about Adolf Hitler’s plans.

China’s direction is already clear. Long ago, it trampled the people of Tibet. Recently, it wiped out Hong Kong’s freedom. It makes near-daily threats against democratic Taiwan. Its systematic and determined cover-up of the origins of COVID-19 led to the worst public health crisis in a century.

Most of all, we know the Chinese government is guilty of genocide. The United States has officially recognized that Beijing is brutally oppressing the Uighur population in its western province of Xinjiang.

Women are forced to have abortions and be sterilized, often without knowing it. And rape and sexual abuse are everywhere. As one rape victim tearfully put it, China’s “goal is to destroy everyone.”

It’s true: China seeks to stamp out the entire Uighur culture and faith, by any means necessary. China denies it all, but the facts are not seriously in dispute.

“It is not a country the United States should glorify through participation in the Winter Olympics,” Haley concluded. “President Biden must make the decision to boycott. It shouldn’t be a tough one.”

Unfortunately, Biden is not likely going to agree.

During a CNN town hall forum earlier this month, Joe Biden said he would not “speak out against” the forced abortions and genocide taking place in China against the Uyghurs because that is their “cultural norm.” Biden said he won’t denounce the genocide of the Uyghur ethnic minority in China, adding that Chinese President Xi Jinping “gets it.”

Biden stated that he refuses to denounce the oppression of the people of Hong Kong, the forceful ending of the China-Taiwan “One China Policy,” and the genocide of the Uyghur Muslims, an ethnic minority group, claiming that “culturally, there are different norms that each country, and they, their leaders are expected to follow.”

China has been “victimized by the outer world” Biden explained and he said  he won’t criticize the communist regime’s egregious human rights abuses because “they haven’t been unified at home.”

That is a clear move away from the position President Donald Trump took that China’s abhorrent treatment of the Uyghurs, which includes forcing them to have abortions and forcibly sterilizing them to be genocide.

Last month, the United States became first nation in the world to call China’s treatment of the Uighurs “genocide.”

The Trump administration condemned the forced abortions taking place in China and officially determined that China’s campaign of mass internment, forced labor and forced sterilization of over 1 million Muslim minorities in Xinjiang constitutes “genocide” and “crimes against humanity.”

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo released the new designation to describe the Chinese Communist Party’s gross human rights.

“After careful examination of the available facts, I have determined that since at least March 2017, the People’s Republic of China (PRC), under the direction and control of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), has committed crimes against humanity against the predominantly Muslim Uyghurs and other members of ethnic and religious minority groups in Xinjiang,” Pompeo said in a statement, adding in a second determination that the CCP has also committed “genocide” there,” he said in a statement.

Pompeo said “these crimes are ongoing” and include forced abortions and sterilizations.

The new designation came after Pompeo ordered an internal review of China’s policy. Morse Tan, U.S. ambassador-at-large for the Office of Global Criminal Justice, undertook the task to determine whether China’s actions in Xinjiang constituted genocide and crimes against humanity.
