David Daleiden, the undercover investigator who exposed Planned Parenthood’s aborted baby body parts trade, slammed President Joe Biden’s nominee for HHS secretary as a “pro-abortion zealot” who is trying to put him in jail for exposing the truth.
This week, the U.S. Senate is considering whether to confirm California Attorney General Xavier Becerra as the new secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. A career politician with no medical background, Becerra has a radical pro-abortion record that includes prosecuting Daleiden and the Center for Medical Progress for their undercover exposé.
Already, he has dodged questions about supporting partial-birth abortions and his attempts to force the Little Sisters of the Poor, nuns who serve the poor and elderly, to fund abortions.
Becerra is trying “to present himself as an amicable moderate seeking ‘common ground’ with all Americans. But this is only a ruse to hide the truth: He is a pro-abortion zealot determined to wield the powers of his office to support and entrench the most extreme interests of the abortion industry,” Daleiden responded at National Review.
For the past four years, Daleiden has been defending himself in court against unprecedented felony charges from Becerra’s office. If convicted, he could go to jail.

“My ‘crime’? Publishing undercover video footage of senior Planned Parenthood leadership callously negotiating the harvesting and sale of aborted baby body parts in 2015,” Daleiden wrote.
Daleiden said Becerra has not charged any other undercover journalists in California even though they have used similar methods to expose animal abuse, unlicensed marijuana sales and corruption among chiropractors. Even the Los Angeles Times, whose editorial board supports abortion, described the felony charges as a “disturbing overreach.”
“It will be a grave injustice if an American citizen can be put on criminal trial simply for publishing the truth,” Daleiden continued.
The prosecutor’s unfair, politically-motivated treatment of pro-lifers should be enough for the U.S. Senate to reject him as HHS secretary, he said.
“His record shows that he would abuse the power of this agency as a weapon in the culture war, wielding it on behalf of political allies like Planned Parenthood and against ‘enemies’ like the Little Sisters of the Poor and me,” Daleiden wrote. “Most gravely, he would fail in HHS’s most basic responsibility to protect the lives and health of the tiniest Americans, instead exploiting them for experimental use and turning the clock back to old policies that say our children are more valuable dead than alive.”
Though Becerra claims to be Catholic, his record involving unborn babies and those who work to protect them is terrible. As head of HHS, Becerra would have even more power to advance a radical anti-life agenda, including expanding late-term abortions on babies capable of feeling pain and forcing taxpayers to pay for their deaths.
Becerra’s record as a former congressman and attorney general do not bode well for the future of religious freedom, free speech or unborn babies’ right to life.
He defended a California law that forced pro-life pregnancy centers to post signs advertising abortions; however, he lost at the U.S. Supreme Court. And he challenged a Trump administration rule that defunded Planned Parenthood of about $60 million in Title X funds.
Becerra also sued the federal government in 2017 because President Donald Trump has instituted a pro-life rule to protect Christians from having to pay for forms of contraception that may cause abortions through the Obamacare abortion mandate. The Little Sisters of the Poor fought the lawsuit because they knew if the mandate were enforced and the pro-life rule overturn, their conscience rights would be in jeopardy.
