Iowa Subcommittee Passes Pro-Life Bill to Help Save Babies From Abortion

An Iowa House subcommittee passed an informed consent measure Tuesday that, should it become law, would make Iowa the 7th state to require abortionists to inform women about to undergo a chemical abortion that the baby can be saved if she changes her mind. This is commonly referred to as “Abortion Pill Reversal.”

The other six states with similar notification are Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Utah.

Of course pro-abortionists—and the vehemently pro-abortion Des Moines Register newspaper–dismissed House File 53 out of hand.

According to Ian Richardson

The bill would require facilities that perform medication-induced abortions to “conspicuously post a sign” relating to the possibility of “avoiding, ceasing or even reversing” the effects. The bill would also require the Iowa Department of Public Health to publish information about reversing the effects on its website.

“After working for several years on pro-life legislation, I have heard and read the testimonies of hundreds of women who had deep regrets of their abortion,” Rep. Shannon Lundgren said in an email sent to the Register. “Many women make this decision because they believe it is the only option they have. Informing a woman that it can be reversed should be part of that discussion to prevent the pain and suffering that many women may have by making that initial choice.”

By contrast, Jamie Burch Elliott, a lobbyist for Planned Parenthood Advocates of Iowa, said in a statement to the newspaper, “It is unethical and dangerous for politicians to require medical professionals to share inaccurate information to promote a political agenda.”

But unborn lives are being saved, and in growing numbers. “The number of lives saved thanks to the Abortion Pill Rescue® Network (APRN) has reached a new milestone as the Network continues around the clock to assist women who have begun a chemical abortion, regret their decision and want another chance at life for their child,” reported Lisa Bourne. “At the close of 2020, the eighth year of the APRN, statistics show that more than 2,000 lives have been saved from Abortion Pill Rescue, and that number continues to rise.”

As Bourne explained

The first drug, mifepristone (Mifeprex/RU-486), blocks progesterone receptors and reduces progesterone levels in the mom’s blood, destabilizing her pregnancy.

The second drug, misoprostol, is taken a day or so after the first drug to complete the abortion by inducing labor.

The abortion pill reversal protocol is a new application of an FDA-approved progesterone treatment used for decades to stop miscarriages. It involves prescribing progesterone, the natural hormone in a mom’s body necessary to sustain pregnancy, to counteract the first abortion drug.

The Register story illustrated for the 100th time how the Abortion Industry misrepresents studies to advance their agenda. Richardson writes

A news release from Planned Parenthood Advocates of Iowa, which included Jenkins’ comments, pointed to a 2019 study of abortion pill “reversal” from the journal “Obstetrics & Gynecology” that … ended early due to safety issues when some of the women who participated began hemorrhaging.

In truth, as Dr. Randall K. O’Bannon, NRL Director of Education & Research explained

The truth is when undergoing a chemical abortion, taking the first drug only, and then doing nothing else, is what is dangerous to women. It is not the abortion pill reversal protocol where a woman not only does not take the second drug, she also takes another drug to ward off the impact of the first drug. APR is safer and more effective at reversal.

And contrary to the spin, that is exactly what the study they’re talking about showed!

House File 53 will now head to the full House Human Services Committee.
