Catholic Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann criticized President Joe Biden on Friday for celebrating Roe v. Wade, a decision that “paved the way for the violent deaths of more than 62 million innocent unborn children.”
Last week marked the 48th anniversary of the infamous U.S. Supreme Court ruling. Biden, a pro-abortion Democrat who says he is a devout Catholic, celebrated the day by promising to “codify” Roe into federal law. If he succeeds, killing unborn babies in abortions without restrictions will be legal even if the Supreme Court overturns its 1973 decision.
Naumann, who chairs the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, issued the statement in response, mourning the president’s “deeply disturbing and tragic” plans, the Catholic News Service reports.
“[Roe v. Wade] denies unborn children their most basic human and civil right, the right to life, under the euphemistic disguise of a health service,” the archbishop said. “I take this opportunity to remind all Catholics that the catechism states, ‘Since the first century the church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable.’”

He echoed American Catholic bishops’ repeated calls for Biden “to reject abortion and promote life-affirming aid to women and communities in need,” according to the report.
Naumann also urged Biden to take responsibility as a public leader and protect every American life, born and unborn.
“Public officials are responsible for not only their personal beliefs, but also the effects of their public actions,” the archbishop said. “Roe’s elevation of abortion to the status of a protected right and its elimination of state restrictions paved the way for the violent deaths of more than 62 million innocent unborn children and for countless women who experience the heartache of loss, abandonment and violence.”
Biden has touted himself as a devout Catholic who cares about the most vulnerable in society. But the Democrat leader also hypocritically champions positions that contradict the teachings of his faith and jeopardize the lives and freedoms of millions of Americans, the worst being his plans to expand abortions and force taxpayers to fund them.
Any day now, Biden is expected to reverse the Mexico City Policy and force taxpayers to fund abortions overseas.
Among other things, he also wants to end the popular Hyde Amendment, which prohibits taxpayer funding for elective abortions in Medicaid and other federal programs. Without it, taxpayers could be forced to pay for tens of thousands of unborn babies’ abortion deaths every year.
Last year, Biden called abortion an “essential medical service” during the coronavirus pandemic. His health care plan would expand abortions as well by forcing insurance companies to cover abortions as “essential” health care under Obamacare.
He also promised to undo all of President Donald Trump’s progress for life, including restoring funding to the billion-dollar abortion chain Planned Parenthood.
Additionally, Biden has endorsed anti-religious freedom policies that would force nuns, religious charities and hospitals to violate their deeply-held beliefs by funding the killing of unborn babies in abortions and potentially even by helping to facilitate their deaths. He promised to restore an Obama-era mandate that would force the nuns with Little Sisters of the Poor and other religious employers to fund contraception, including types that may cause abortions, in their employee health insurance plans.
