Justice Sotomayor: Death Penalty for Convicted Murderers is Wrong But Killing Innocent Babies is OK

Why do so many of our nation’s leaders refuse to treat unborn babies as the valuable human beings who they are?

They call out injustice against inmates on death row, families in poverty, immigrants and refugees, and so many others. They condemn racism and sexism, and they promise to fight for the downtrodden. Yet, too many refuse to acknowledge – and some even fight for – the greatest injustice in America today: the massive killing of unborn babies in abortions.

Pro-abortion Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor is one of them. This week, she attracted media attention when she slammed the high court for allowing an “unprecedented rush of federal executions” in a scathing opinion.

Sotomayor dissented from the majority in a death penalty case involving 48-year-old Dustin Higgs, who was convicted in the kidnappings and murders of three women. She said the 13 federal executions since July, including Higgs’, are “not justice,” according to NBC News.

With Higgs’ execution being allowed by the Supreme Court, she said the federal government “will have executed more than three times as many people in the last six months than it had in the previous six decades.”

Sotomayor accused the court of rejecting inmates’ “credible claims for relief” and acting far too quickly on matters of life and death.

“The Court made these weighty decisions in response to emergency applications, with little opportunity for proper briefing and consideration, often in just a few short days or even hours,” she continued. “There can be no justice on the fly in matters of life and death. Those whom the government executes during this endeavor deserved more from this Court.”

Powerful words. Sotomayor’s opinion drew attention to the great moral weight, the permanence of purposefully destroying another person’s life. She recognized that, even though those 13 people were convicted of serious crimes, their lives still had value and they deserved justice and basic human rights.

Surely one of the greatest legal minds in the country should be able to understand that a child in the womb at least deserves the same justice and right to life as a person convicted of a crime. And like few others, she has the power to save millions of babies’ lives by overturning Roe v. Wade and restoring unborn babies’ right to life.

But, tragically, she will not. Sotomayor refuses to give similar consideration to this group of innocent, defenseless human beings – babies whose lives are far more frequently destroyed without consideration for their rights or futures.

Every year, nearly 1 million unborn babies are killed in abortions, but Sotomayor believes their deaths are a “right.” She, like so many others, will not recognize the basic science and the logic that proves abortion is a horrific injustice against innocent children.
