“Gosnell” filmmakers Ann McElhinney and Phelim McAleer temporarily were kicked off Twitter on Monday amid growing online censorship of conservative voices.
Their account @AP_Scoop since has been reinstated, but McAleer and McElhinney said people need to keep fighting back against censorship by “tech tyrants.”
“This is a complete eradication of conservative thought on social media,” McElhinney said in a video posted online. “You have to fight back … and speak out against this censorship by these tech tyrants.”
On Monday, McAleer and McElhinney said they received an email from Twitter informing them that their account was suspended. Twitter accused them of “violating our rules against platform manipulation and spam.”
“Note that if you attempt to evade a permanent suspension by creating new accounts, we will suspend your new accounts,” the email continued.
A few hours later, the social media platform reinstated their account, but the filmmaker said they lost followers.
“What on earth is happening at Twitter? In less than a few hours we’ve been: 1. Banned 2. Reinstated 3. And now it says we have no followers,” they wrote Monday night.

Twitter sent an email with an apology and said their account was “flagged as spam by mistake.” It also said it could take about an hour for their followers to return to normal.
As of Tuesday morning, it appears that their followers are back. However, McAleer and McElhinney said they had about 10,000 followers, but now they are down to about 8,000.
Other individuals and groups also have noticed a steep drop in followers as social media giants censor conservatives. LifeNews.com has lost almost 27,500 followers on Twitter since Jan. 1.
“It’s funny how liberal accounts don’t lose followers or get banned,” McAleer and McElhinney wrote Monday. “I wonder why.”
The filmmakers said they, like many others, are turning to alternative social media platforms like Gab and Cloudhub to share their perspectives. They also encouraged their followers to sign up for their emails to stay informed.
McAleer said “un-elected tyrants” who basically have a monopoly on the internet are trying to censor what people can say, and it “has to stop.”
“So much for free speech,” he said.
The filmmakers are well-known for producing the film “Gosnell,” based on the true story of Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell who was convicted of murdering three newborn babies in 2013.
They faced censorship while trying to promote the film as well. They said Facebook refused to allow them to advertise the film and it never gave a reason why.
