Police in India arrested a man on his wedding day after he allegedly raped and impregnated a woman and then forced her to abort their unborn baby.
As the new allegations and numerous other crime stories indicate, abortions frequently are connected to other abuses against women and children.
According to the The Khaleej Times, police said the woman died Tuesday at a hospital in Meerut, India from abortion complications. She was five months pregnant with her unborn child, a second victim of the alleged abuse, according to police.
“The woman was in a relationship with the man, who was sexually exploiting her on the pretext of marriage. Her condition deteriorated after she was given abortion pills,” said Santosh Kumar Singh, senior superintendent of police in Bulandshahr. “She was referred to a Meerut hospital where she died during treatment.”
The Times of India reports police in Bulandshahr arrested the 24-year-old man just minutes before he was supposed to get married. It is not clear if the woman whom he was supposed to marry is the same woman whom he allegedly abused.
Police said the woman was abused for several months before her family learned about it and reported it to authorities.
Women and girls frequently are forced or coerced to abort their unborn babies by abusers. As LifeNews previously reported, one study found that 64 percent of post-abortive women said they felt pressure to have the abortion. Forced and coerced abortions also are common among sex trafficking victims.
