Pro-Life Senator Tom Cotton Would Vote Against Pro-Abortion Xavier Becerra

Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton urged the U.S. Senate on Tuesday to reject the confirmation of Xavier Becerra as secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services because of his radical pro-abortion record.

Joe Biden named Becerra as his choice for the position Monday, should he be confirmed as the winner of the presidency. The attorney general of California, Becerra is prosecuting two pro-life leaders who exposed Planned Parenthood’s aborted baby body parts trade, and he wants to force nuns to pay for abortifacients in their employee health plans.

“He’s a true radical on abortion,” Cotton told Fox and Friends on Tuesday. “He supported the lawsuits against nuns. He’s gone after pro-life activists in California who exposed some truly grizzly crimes by Planned Parenthood.”

Breitbart reports Cotton, a pro-life Republican, told his fellow senators that they should not confirm Becerra because he is so radical and out of touch with most Americans.

“I woke up this morning with a message from a friend in California who said that Xavier Becerra is so far to the left he makes Bernie Sanders look like a Tea Partier,” Cotton said. “… he supports Medicare for All. He’s going to be responsible for running Medicare, and Medicaid, and Obamacare, and many other health care programs. He is going to use the discretion the law gives him to try to take away your health insurance on the job to give less flexibility, less control to families and to states who are in charge of these health care decisions.”

He also criticized Becerra for leading the lockdowns in California that stopped people from going to church and school.

“Defending the kind of decisions we saw over the weekend where the city of Los Angeles will allow a well-connected film crew to set up a canteen in a parking lot of a restaurant but won’t allow that restaurant to serve people just outside their premises,” Cotton said. “Xavier Becerra will be Joe Biden’s nationwide lockdown enforcer. The Senate ought not to confirm him.”

As head of HHS, Becerra would have even more power to advance a radical anti-life agenda, including expanding late-term abortions on babies capable of feeling pain and forcing taxpayers to pay for their deaths.

Becerra’s record as a former congressman and attorney general do not bode well for the future of religious freedom, free speech or unborn babies’ right to life.

Currently, his office is prosecuting David Daleiden, the Center for Medical Progress journalist who exposed Planned Parenthood’s aborted baby body parts trade. Daleiden’s powerful exposé led to the shutdown of two companies that sold aborted baby body parts in California.

However, Becerra is pursuing multiple felony charges against him and fellow investigator Sandra Merritt. If convicted, the pro-life leaders could be sent to jail on charges of eavesdropping, falsifying documents and recording people without their consent.

Becerra also has been fighting against a religious exemption from Obamacare that President Donald Trump put in place to protect the Little Sisters of the Poor, a charity of nuns that serves the poor and elderly, and other religious employers.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Trump rule in June, but Biden said he would reverse it and force the Little Sisters, Hobby Lobby and other religious employers to pay for abortifacients for their employees.

Becerra’s pro-abortion politics extend to pregnancy resource centers as well. In 2018, he defended a California law that forced pro-life pregnancy centers to post signs advertising abortions; however, he lost at the U.S. Supreme Court.

Years earlier, while serving in Congress, Becerra developed a 100-percent pro-abortion voting record from Planned Parenthood and NARAL, PJ Media reports. These actions include voting against a ban on partial-birth abortions and for taxpayer-funded abortions.

Becerra’s radical positions are vastly out of touch with most Americans. National polling consistently shows most Americans — including many who are “pro-choice” on abortion — oppose late-term abortions and do not want their tax dollars to pay for them.
