Catholic Bishops Congratulate Joe Biden But Ignore His Radical Pro-Abortion Views

The leader of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops congratulated Democrat Joe Biden for his supposed victory over the weekend without mentioning Biden’s radical pro-abortion views or the fact that the election is in dispute amid allegations of voter fraud.

The statement from Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles, president of the bishops conference, highlighted Biden as the second Catholic to be elected president of the United States. However, Gomez did not mention how the supposedly Catholic politician supports policies that contradict the teachings of the Catholic Church and jeopardize religious freedom for faithful Catholics.

“The American people have spoken in this election. Now is the time for our leaders to come together in a spirit of national unity and to commit themselves to dialogue and compromise for the common good,” Gomez said.

The archbishop urged Catholics to promote peace and pray for unity throughout the country.

“Democracy requires that all of us conduct ourselves as people of virtue and self-discipline,” Gomez continued. “It requires that we respect the free expression of opinions and that we treat one another with charity and civility, even as we might disagree deeply in our debates on matters of law and public policy.”

He congratulated Biden and vice presidential running mate Kamala Harris for their victory and asked “the Blessed Virgin Mary, patroness of this great nation, to intercede” for America.

Though Biden’s campaign and many news outlets have presumed victory, votes are still being certified and the Trump campaign has pointed to evidence of voter fraud in multiple states.

Meanwhile, many Catholic voters are expressing serious concerns about Biden’s and Harris’s pro-abortion policies, which could increase the killing of unborn babies in abortions.

Mary FioRito, the Cardinal George Fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, told The Tablet that she does not understand how Catholics can support a man who claims to be Catholic but supports killing unborn babies in abortions.

“When you’re talking about this being an important part of your life, if you take that foundation of social Catholic teaching out it’s like a house of cards,” FioRito said.

Here’s more from The Tablet:

[Author] Theresa Farnan shares this stance on abortion, but with a more specific concern.

Her focus is on eugenic abortion. As a mother of a child with Down syndrome, she fears fewer abortion restrictions will open the door for women to get an abortion because the baby has Down Syndrome or another disability. …

“I’m actually very sad about it,” she said. “I really am worried that the full-bore ‘pedal to the metal’ approach of democrats in support of unrestricted abortion rights is going to lead to even more pressure on expecting mothers.”

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops also urged Catholics to make the sanctity of life for unborn babies a “preeminent priority” at the voting booth in November. Some Catholic leaders spoke out against Biden’s hypocrisy on the issue as well.

If his victory is confirmed, Biden has promised to support policies that will expand the killing of unborn babies in abortions and force taxpayers to fund their deaths.

Biden said he wants to codify Roe v. Wade into federal law and appoint Supreme Court justices who will support abortion on demand. He also said he would fight to end the Hyde Amendment and force taxpayers to pay for elective abortions – which could lead to 60,000 more unborn babies’ deaths to abortion each year.

In April, Biden went so far as to call the killing of unborn babies an “essential medical service” during the coronavirus pandemic. His health care plan would expand abortions as well. It would force insurance companies to cover abortions as “essential” health care under Obamacare.

He also promised to undo all of Trump’s progress for life, including defunding the Planned Parenthood abortion chain through his Mexico City and Title X policies.

On religious freedom, Biden’s position also is deeply troubling. Biden has endorsed anti-religious freedom policies that would force nuns, religious charities and hospitals to violate their deeply-held beliefs by funding the killing of unborn babies in abortions and potentially even by helping to facilitate their deaths.

Among them, he and his running mate Kamala Harris oppose a religious exemption from the Obamacare contraception mandate for the Little Sisters of the Poor, a nuns’ charity that serves the poor and elderly. The Supreme Court recently granted the Little Sisters relief from the Obama-era mandate, which would have forced them to fund contraception, including forms that may cause abortions, in their employee health plans.
