A premature baby boy who doctors believed to be dead was found alive in a hospital morgue Oct. 21 in Puebla, Mexico.
Newsweek reports the government agency Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) confirmed it is investigating the shocking incident.
According to the report, the baby was born at 23 weeks of pregnancy on Oct. 21 at La Margarita General Hospital. Medical staff allegedly determined that the baby had died at birth and told the parents, the report continues.
However, approximately six hours later after the baby was placed in a refrigerator in the hospital morgue, staff from a local funeral home discovered that he was still alive, the Daily Mail reports.
“When we arrived we realized it was crying and moving,” said Miguel Angel Flores, the owner of Funeraria Flores. “We called the father over and he also saw it was crying and so we got the doctor who had signed the death certificate to come urgently.”
The baby boy was rushed to the neonatal intensive care unit where, a day later, medical professionals reported that he was still alive, the Mail reports. LifeNews could not discover a more recent update on the baby’s condition.

The IMSS government agency, which is investigating, said it is difficult to predict if the baby will survive because he was born so prematurely.
IMSS reports the hospital staff pronounced the baby dead soon after birth because he did not show any vital signs.
“When the body was about to be handed over to a relative, medical staff and a representative of the undertakers realized the baby was alive,” IMSS reported. “It received immediate medical attention before being rushed to a neonatal intensive care unit.”
“Hospital authorities have spoken to the baby’s father and they will continue to inform the family about the youngster’s state of health,” the government agency continued. “The case is being investigated.”
Newsweek reports Santiago Albino Hernández, the baby’s father, told local news reporters that his son’s life is a miracle.
