A national feminist group urged Senate Democrats to use “the tricks up their sleeves” Monday to stop the confirmation of pro-life Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court.
In an email to supporters, National Organization for Women (NOW) president Christian F. Nunes called Barrett a “dangerous nominee” because she believes it’s “immoral” to abort an unborn baby. Nunes demanded that the U.S. Senate postpone filling the seat on the high court until 2021.
“Amy Coney Barrett was picked because she checks all the right boxes to please Donald Trump,” the NOW leader wrote. “Trump made it clear he would only appoint justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade, and she’s written that abortion is ‘always immoral.’”
She also criticized Barrett for “calling common birth-control methods ‘abortion drugs’” – even though it is true. Some birth control methods can cause early abortions, including the copper IUD and the pill ella.
Barrett is Trump’s choice to fill the seat of the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, an idol of abortion activists who died in September. If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Barrett would solidify a strong 6-3 conservative majority on the high court.

Pro-life advocates hope and abortion activists fear that Barrett could lead to the undoing of Roe v. Wade and help restore protections for unborn babies.
The Senate Judiciary Committee began its hearing to confirm her Monday morning.
Nunes urged abortion activists to “step up our grassroots activism” to stop Barrett from being confirmed.
“We must push [Senate Minority Leader] Chuck Schumer and other left-wing Senators to use the few tricks up their sleeves to put an end to this confirmation process,” she wrote. “And we must show up and show out—letting Trump, McConnell, and Graham know we won’t stand for another stolen SCOTUS seat.”
Abortion advocacy groups that claim to fight for women are spending millions of dollars to try to stop Trump from filling the seat with a strong pro-life conservative. But Republicans control the U.S. Senate, and pro-life leaders have strong hopes that they will confirm Barrett.
Pro-life leaders have praised her as an excellent choice for the court.
Barrett is a judge on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and a former clerk of the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Like Scalia, she has been described as an “originalist” judge. Though her judicial rulings on abortion are few, she did rule in support of two Indiana pro-life laws during her time on the Seventh Circuit.
She signed a letter in 2006 that described abortion as “barbaric” and called for an end to Roe v. Wade. She also was a member of the Notre Dame University Faculty for Life Group from 2010 to 2016, and she received an award from the Thomas More Society, a pro-life Catholic legal group, in 2018.
Additionally, she has made several statements about the value of babies in the womb. According to Law and Crime, Barrett signed a public letter in 2015 that emphasized “the value of human life from conception to natural death.” She also said she believes that life begins at conception.
