Today, the Ohio Department of Health released the annual Ohio Induced Abortion Report revealing a decrease in the number of reported abortions last year.  According to the report, abortions decreased by 323, which is a two percent decrease from 2018. From 2001 to 2019, the annual decline averaged approximately 960 abortions per year.

Last year, there were 20,102 abortions, or 55 abortions performed every day. Overall, this represents a 2% decrease in overall abortions in Ohio compared to 2018, and a 30% decrease in abortions since 2009.

Mike Gonidakis, president of Ohio Right to Life, told LifeNews.com:

“Ohio’s 2019 abortion report reveals what we already know: Ohio’s culture of life is advancing in the right direction. Tragically, 20,102 unborn babies still lost their lives to abortion in 2019 which far outpaces any cause of death for children in the state of Ohio.”

“Thanks to the compassion and conviction of Pro-Life Ohio, abortions continue to decline year after year. A culture of life is winning in Ohio and we are closer than ever to overturning Roe v. Wade. With renewed vigor Ohio Right to Life will continue to hold the abortion industry accountable and advocate on behalf of vulnerable women and their precious unborn children. In our lifetime we will end abortion in Ohio and we will no longer need an abortion report. Until then we will keep working tirelessly to affirm the right to life of every human. We look forward to the day when abortion is ended and no women feels as if she must chose between herself and her child.”

“Pro-Life Ohio thanks President Trump, Governor DeWine and our pro-life legislature for their passionate advocacy for life.”

“Ohio is steadily making progress to protect unborn children and their mothers from the dangerous and deadly practices of the abortion industry,” said Aaron Baer, president of Citizens for Community Values. “The combination of pro-life leadership in the governor’s office and General Assembly, combined with the incredible work churches and Pregnancy Resource Centers in communities throughout Ohio is saving lives.”

“Unfortunately, we continue to see that the African American community is hardest hit by the abortion industry. While African Americans make up 13% of the population of Ohio, 41.7% of the children lost to abortion in 2019 were African American. The systematic eradication of African American children by abortion industry proves that Planned Parenthood does not believe black lives matter – especially little African American babies’ lives.”

Over the last several years, Ohio has become a leader in enacting pro-life legislation, most recently in 2019, Governor Mike DeWine signed the Heartbeat Bill, prohibiting abortion in Ohio once an unborn child’s heartbeat is detected. The Bill is currently enjoined from taking effect by a Federal Judge in the Southern District of Ohio.

“In 2018, there were few bills debated, scrutinized and publicized in the election more than the Heartbeat Bill. Ohioans overwhelmingly voted for pro-life majorities in the Ohio House and Senate, and elected Governor DeWine, who ran on signing the Heartbeat Bill,” said Baer. “As we prepare to vote once again, candidates should remember this: Ohioans care deeply for the most vulnerable: the unborn.”
