Pro-abortion feminists rioted Monday in Mexico City, throwing Molotov cocktails at police and smashing windows during an International Safe Abortion Day protest.
Associated Press Television News reports the protesters demanded that Mexico legalize abortion on demand across the country. Currently, abortions are legal in some parts of the country, while unborn babies are protected from abortions in others.
An increasingly frequent occurrence, the protest became violent when hundreds of pro-abortion protesters began using hammers to smash windows and doors, according to the report. Others threw paint, bottles, Molotov cocktails and flares at police, Reuters reports.
The police, many of whom were female officers, extinguished the fires and sprayed tear gas at the violent mob, according to the reports.
It appears some of the rioters also may have been trying to attack pro-life advocates who were holding a counter-protest in a different part of the city.

Some demonstrators also grabbed riot shields from police and formed a phalanx to try to advance. The city government said it would not allow the march to advance while protesters carried dangerous objects.
The city said it was in a difficult spot, because conservative groups have set up their own protest encampment in the city’s main plaza, which is where the abortion protesters want to go.
Mexico has witnessed a spate of pro-abortion vandalism and violence in the past year. In June, several Catholic churches in Veracruz were vandalized with pro-abortion and anarchist symbols, the Catholic News Agency reported at the time. A week earlier, five other churches also were vandalized with pro-abortion phrases, including “abortion will be legal,” “keep your rosaries off our ovaries” and “get angry sister.”
And in March, a video showed pro-abortion feminists trying to break into a church where families with young children were worshiping during an International Women’s Day protest.
