Pope Francis prayed Wednesday for lawmakers to “awaken” to the human rights injustice of abortion during his weekly address at the Vatican.

Breitbart reports the pontiff urged lawmakers across the world to stand for life as he blessed a bell named “the Voice of the Unborn.” The bell was a gift from the Polish pro-life organization Yes to Life.

Pope Francis said he hopes the ringing of the bell will “awaken the consciences of lawmakers and all people of good will in Poland and in the world” to the value of unborn babies.

“It will accompany events aimed at reminding us of the value of human life from conception to natural death,” Francis said, adding that God is “the only and true giver of life.”

Many times, Pope Francis has condemned abortion and urged Christians to protect every human life. In 2018, he caused outrage among abortion activists after comparing abortion to “hiring a hitman” to kill unborn babies. He frequently describes aborted babies as victims of a “throwaway culture” and encourages society to recognize their value.

Here’s more from Breitbart:

Saint John Paul II reiterated on numerous occasions that “those who are directly involved in lawmaking bodies have a ‘grave and clear obligation to oppose’ any law that attacks human life. For them, as for every Catholic, it is impossible to promote such laws or to vote for them.”

“In the case of an intrinsically unjust law, such as a law permitting abortion or euthanasia, it is therefore never licit to obey it, or to take part in a propaganda campaign in favour of such a law, or vote for it,” John Paul wrote.

The Vatican has stressed that “a well-formed Christian conscience does not permit one to vote for a political program or an individual law which contradicts the fundamental contents of faith and morals.”

The pope’s message Wednesday comes at a critical time for Americans as the presidential election approaches. President Donald Trump and Democrat challenger Joe Biden have drastically opposing views on abortion.

Biden, who claims to be Catholic, supports the unrestricted killing of unborn babies in abortions and wants to force taxpayers to pay for them. Trump, in contrast, supports pro-life legislation and has enacted policies that defund the abortion industry and protect unborn babies and those who support their rights.

Trump also promised to appoint pro-life judges to the U.S. Supreme Court, while Biden said he would appoint judges who support Roe v. Wade, a decision that led to 62 million unborn babies’ abortion deaths.
