Today Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI), the research arm of the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List), published a new report on emerging abortion trends in the United States.
Ahead of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as the Guttmacher Institute, CLI has the first analysis of trends revealed by the latest available state abortion reports from calendar year 2018. Key findings include:
- In the 38 states where data is available, abortions increased by nearly two percent from the previous year.
- The increase in abortion can be largely attributed to the surge in chemical abortion nationwide.
- In abortion-permissive states, typically blue states with pro-abortion legislatures, abortion increased by over four percent; whereas in life-protecting states, abortion increased by less than one percent.
- Despite an increase in chemical abortion, roughly 50,000-60,000 lives were saved in life-protecting states as compared to states that are more permissive of abortion.
“Use of the dangerous chemical abortion pill regimen has exploded within the abortion industry. This method of abortion surged upward by nine percent between 2017 and 2018, making up 41 percent of total abortions in 2018 alone,” said Tessa Longbons, CLI research associate and author of the new report.

“This preliminary analysis of 2018 data reveals an important distinction between states that more readily permit abortion versus states that are protective of life. The recent increase in abortion, though cause for concern and vigilance, does not undo the critical progress made in advancing protections for unborn babies and their mothers across the nation over the past decade. Between 2009 and 2018, abortions dropped by 18 percent. Due to inconsistencies in abortion reporting or lack of reporting from certain states, it is difficult to determine how this 2018 data will impact the societal landscape. However, this first look at available data is an important reminder of the progress the pro-life movement has made so far,” CLI President Chuck Donovan added.
CLI experts have previously criticized flawed research on chemical abortion drugs suggesting that self-administered chemical abortions do not pose dangers to women. As many as five to seven percent of women who undergo chemical abortions will require follow-up surgery and three percent could end up in the emergency room. Today, the majority of Planned Parenthood abortion centers (56%) provide solely chemical abortions.
