Pro-Life Democrats Slam Joe Biden for Supporting Abortions Up to Birth

More than 100 pro-life Democrat leaders urged their party and Joe Biden to stop supporting abortion on demand Sunday in a full-page ad in the New York Times.

Sponsored by Democrats for Life, the ad listed the names of 109 current and former pro-life Democrat politicians who are unhappy with their party’s growing extremism on the issue, The Federalist reports.

“Our party has traditionally been very tolerant and welcoming of diverse views, yet it has pushed away Americans who are with us on many issues, but share a strong conviction on abortion,” executive director Kristen Day said in a statement.

The ad featured a letter to the Democratic Party Platform Committee, slamming Democrat leadership for supporting late-term abortions and taxpayer-funded abortions in the U.S. and overseas. It cited polls showing how widely unpopular both positions are with most Americans.

“In 389 out of 435 Congressional districts, a majority of voters support a ban on abortion after 20 weeks,” the letter stated. “When Democratic leaders support late-term abortion, they push many voters into the arms of the Republican Party. Many people supporting pro-life views are single-issue voters.”

SIGN THE PLEDGE: We Can’t Vote for Pro-Abortion Joe Biden

Day estimated that about 21 million Democrats are pro-life, and many may stay home rather than vote for a candidate like Biden who supports the killing of unborn babies in abortions without restriction.

“If the Democratic Party cares about defeating President Trump in November, it should reject abortion extremism and actively embrace America’s 21 million pro-life Democrats, or else many of them will simply stay home,” Day said. “It’s not too late for Joe Biden and our party.”

Among the 109 Democrats who signed the letter were Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, nine current and former Members of Congress, including U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson of Minnesota, and 57 state legislators, including Rhode Island state Rep. Deborah Fellela and Louisiana state Sen. Katrina Jackson.

Several pro-life organizations joined Democrats for Life in supporting the ad: Pro-Black Pro-Life, Secular Pro-Life, Rehumanize International, PLAGAL, Pro-Life San Francisco, National Men for Life and New Wave Feminists.

“… we are concerned about the betrayal of Democratic Party values,” the ad states. “An extreme position on abortion rights violates our commitment to inclusivity and diversity. Polling consistently shows that one in three Democrats is pro-life.”

The Democratic Party has adopted an increasingly radical stance on abortion. In 2016 and again in 2020, the DNC approved a platform that supports abortions without restriction and taxpayer funding of abortions.

Biden supports abortions without restriction and wants to force taxpayers to fund unborn babies’ abortion deaths. He recently said he believes in a “woman’s constitutional right to choice under any circumstances.” During the coronavirus shutdowns, he even called elective abortions an “essential medical service.”

Most Americans oppose most abortions and want laws to limit abortions or make them illegal. In a July poll, Gallup found 55 percent of Americans take a pro-life position on abortion wanting all (21 percent) or almost all (39 percent) abortions made illegal. The poll found just 29 percent of Americans think abortions should be legal in all cases, the position of the Democratic Party.

Polls consistently show that most Americans do not want their tax dollars paying for abortions either. A Politico/Harvard University poll found that a majority of voters oppose taxpayer funding for abortions. Just 36 percent of likely voters supported the issue, while 58 percent opposed it.
