The United Nations passed a COVID-19 resolution last week that tries to pass off the killing of unborn babies in abortions as “health care.”

Both United States and Vatican representatives to the UN criticized the inclusion of language promoting “sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights” in the “Comprehensive and Coordinated Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic” resolution, the Catholic News Agency reports.

“[The Holy See] considers the phrase ‘reproductive health’ and related terms as applying to a holistic concept of health, which embraces the person in the entirety of his or her personality, mind and body,” Archbishop Gabriele Caccia said Sept. 11 after the UN General Assembly voted in favor of the resolution.

The U.S. and Israel voted against the resolution, and Hungary and Ukraine abstained, but 169 other countries voted in favor of it, according to the report.

Caccia criticized language in the resolution that encourages countries “to take all measures necessary to ensure the right of women and girls to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health, including sexual and reproductive health, and reproductive rights.”

He said: “In particular, the Holy See rejects the interpretation that considers abortion or access to abortion, sex-selective abortion, abortion of fetuses diagnosed with health challenges, maternal surrogacy, and sterilization as dimensions of ‘reproductive health,’ or as part of universal health coverage.”

The United States joined the Vatican in its criticism of the pro-abortion language.

“The United States believes in legal protections for the unborn, and rejects any interpretation of international human rights to require any State Party to provide safe, legal and effective access to abortion,” the U.S. Mission to the UN said in a statement. “We do not accept references to ‘sexual and reproductive health,’ ‘sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights,’ or other language that suggests or explicitly states that access to legal abortion is necessarily included in the more general terms ‘health services’ or ‘health care services’ in particular contexts concerning women.”

The Trump administration has been pushing back aggressively against pro-abortion politics at the UN. In August, U.S. Ambassador to the UN Andrew Bremberg slammed the international agency for “perverting” human rights by advocating for the killing of unborn babies in abortions.

Bremberg also criticized the UN for being “notably quiet” on the horrific reports of human rights abuses in China, including forced abortions through all nine months of pregnancy, infanticide, forced sterilizations and the placement of ethnic minorities in concentration camps.

Since 2017, Trump has defunded the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) of tens of millions of U.S. tax dollars. UNFPA advocates for abortions across the world and has worked with China for decades to implement its oppressive population control policies.

Under the pro-abortion Obama administration, U.S. taxpayers gave more than $300 million to UNFPA.
