Man Sold His Newborn Baby Boy for $700 After His Wife Refused to Have Abortion

A desperate Indian woman appealed to the National Human Rights Commission for help recently after she said her husband sold their newborn son and then disappeared.

The Orissa Post reports Tapan Palai, of Salia Sahi, Odisha, India, is accused of kidnapping and selling their son after his wife refused to have an abortion.

According to the report, he sold the newborn baby boy for 50,000 rupees (about $680) to pay for hospital bills.

The wife, who is not named in the report, said her husband told her that he was not ready to have a child and pressured her to have an abortion. She said he gave her abortion drugs to kill their unborn child, but the drugs did not work.

On March 26, she gave birth to their son at a local hospital, according to the report.

Two days later, she said she noticed that her baby was missing and asked her husband about it. She said he admitted that he sold the baby to pay for their hospital bills and threatened to kill her if she told anyone. She said he ran away and has been missing since then.

The desperate mother said she went to the local police but they did not help. According to the report, she recently approached the National Human Rights Commission for help finding her son and bringing charges against her husband.
