If you happened across stories with headlines resembling this—”What we learned” from the third night of the Republican National Convention—buckle up for chances are you’re entering the Twilight Zone. What do I mean?
Granted, I am not a Trump hater. Like most pro-lifers, it’s my opinion he is the most pro-life president we’ve had in the 47 years since Roe v. Wade was dropped on an unsuspecting American public from 40,000 feet by an U.S. Supreme Court with its head in the clouds.
But I am a lover of the truth. And whether you love, loathe, or are somewhere in the middle with regards to President Trump, you want the media to make at least a passing attempt at telling what actually transpired Wednesday night. With an occasional exception, the major media failed that test abysmally.
Here are my four takeaways. I will save the wonderful, in-depth celebration of unborn life for #4.
#1. The convention continued with what is arguably its most effective component: stories of the lives of everyday people. As my wife pointed out, only the hardest core Democrat could think listening to Hillary Clinton whine for the gazillionth time is more powerful than ordinary men and women celebrating the American Dream as they overcome one hurtle after another after another to help their fellow citizens.
#2. Speaking of whining, the pro-Democrat talking heads couldn’t stop dissing the convention’s “pageantry.” But with the exception of Vice President Mike Pence’s evisceration of Joe Biden’s record on life (and pretty much everything else) delivered at the historic setting of Ft. McHenry, the speeches were delivered in the Spartan setting of an empty room, standing at a podium. The only “pageantry” were the many American flags.

#3. Pro-abortion Democrats are incensed that any man or woman of color could support Donald Trump. So when last night’s roster of speakers featured a great many people of color (and many, many women—also a category Democrats insist is their preserve), it drove the anti-Trump media crazy.
Ironically, as I watched, I scrolled through a story written by Paul Bedard, describing the results of the latest Zogby Analytics poll. “Buoyed by blacks and independent voters,” it begins, “President Trump’s approval rating has hit a new high, according to a survey heavy with minority voters”: 52%.
“The president has recorded his best job approval rating on record,” said pollster Jonathan Zogby.
What’s more, his approval rating among minorities was solid and, in the case of African Americans, shockingly high. Zogby said 36% of blacks approve of the president, as do 37% of Hispanics and 35% of Asians.
#4. Last night, it seemed as if having listened to one speaker talk about abortion, you could step out for a bit and be confident when you came back that Vice President Pence, or coach Lou Holtz, or Tera Myers, the mother of a child with Down syndrome, or Sr. Deirdre “Dede” Byrne would be extolling President Trump’s commitment to life. Here are a few samples:
*Vice President Pence: “We supported the right to life and all of the God-given rights enshrined in our Constitution…”
* Lou Holtz: “One of the important reasons he has my trust is because nobody is but a stronger advocate for the unborn than President Trump. The Biden-Harris ticket is the most radically pro-abortion campaign in history. They and other politicians are Catholics in name only and abandon innocent lives. President Trump protected those lives. I trust President Trump.”
Sr. Deirdre “Dede” Byrne: “As followers of Christ, we are called to stand up for life against the politically correct or fashionable of today. We must fight against a legislative agenda that supports and even celebrates destroying life in the womb. Keep in mind, the laws we create define how we see our humanity. We must ask ourselves: What we are saying when we go into a womb and snuff out an innocent, powerless, voiceless life? As a physician, I can say without hesitation: Life begins at conception. While what I have to say may be difficult for some to hear, I am saying it because I am not just pro-life, I am pro-eternal life. I want all of us to end up in heaven together someday. Which brings me to why I am here today. Donald Trump is the most pro-life president this nation has ever had, defending life at all stages. His belief in the sanctity of life transcends politics. President Trump will stand up against Biden-Harris, who are the most anti-life presidential ticket ever, even supporting the horrors of late-term abortion and infanticide. Because of his courage and conviction, President Trump has earned the support of America’s pro-life community. Moreover, he has a nationwide of religious standing behind him. You’ll find us here with our weapon of choice, the rosary. Thank you, Mr. President, we are all praying for you.”
Tera Myers. If her remarks didn’t move you… “Before Samuel was even born I was told his life wouldn’t be worth living. When early tests revealed he had Down Syndrome, our doctor encouraged me to terminate the pregnancy. He said ‘If you do not, you will be burdening your life, family and your community.’ I knew my baby was a human being created by God and that made him worthy of life. I am thankful that President Trump values the life of the unborn.”
Recently Samuel and his mom were invited to the White House to meet with the President to talk about another topic. “President Trump shook my hand and said ‘Wonderful job Mom, your son is amazing.’ Unlike the doctor who told me to end Samuel’s life before it even began, President Trump did not dismiss my son, he showed Samuel he valued him and was proud of what he accomplished.”
