As day two opens for the Democratic National Convention, the Democratic Party’s theme for the evening is “Leadership Matters.” But the Democratic Party, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris have failed to lead on one of the most fundamental issues guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution: the unalienable right to life.
“President Trump and Vice President Pence are the only candidates who stand for the right to life,” said Carol Tobias, president of the National Right to Life Committee. “From his first day in office, President Trump and his Administration have been firm in advancing policies and directives that protect the right to life for the unborn, the elderly, the medically dependent, and those with disabilities.”
President Trump pledged to “veto any legislation that weakens current pro-life federal polices and laws, or that encourages the destruction of innocent human life at any stage.”
One of the president’s first acts in office was to restore Mexico City Policy, which prevents tax funds from being given to organizations that perform abortions or lobby to change abortion laws of host countries. Later, the president expanded this into the Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance policy that prevents $9 billion in foreign aid from being used to fund the global abortion industry.

The Trump Administration also cut off funding to the United Nations Population Fund because of that agency’s involvement with China’s forced abortion program.
President Trump supports the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. This legislation extends protection to unborn children who are at least 20 weeks because by this point in development (and probably earlier), the unborn child has the capacity to experience excruciating pain during typical abortion procedures.
In 2017, President Trump issued a statement affirming his strong support for the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, saying he “would sign the bill.” The bill would permanently prohibit any federal program from funding elective abortion.
In May 2019, the Trump administration finalized new regulations to strengthen enforcement of federal laws protecting the conscience rights of health care workers who do not want to participate in abortion. The regulations clarify what recourse is available to victims of discrimination under the law and what penalties the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Civil Rights may enforce for violations.
“President Trump and Vice President Pence have made the right to life a cornerstone issue of this presidency,” said Tobias. “We thank the President and Vice President for their commitment to protecting this fundamental right.”
