Vice President Mike Pence criticized Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday night, saying some of New York’s coronavirus-related deaths came as a result of Cuomo’s policies.

Pence made the remarks during an appearance on Fox News with host Laura Ingraham on Monday. He said the deaths in New York and across the country are a tragedy, but highlighted Cuomo’s “on-again-off-again” support for President Donald Trump’s response to coronavirus.

“One in five of all the American lives that have been lost in the coronavirus pandemic have been lost in the state of New York,” Pence said. “And some of that because of poor decisions by the state and by Governor Cuomo.”

Cuomo has been widely criticized over his policy of sending coronavirus-infected seniors to be treated at nursing homes.

Cuomo touted an internal report earlier this year saying the policy was not responsible for the deaths, arguing it exonerated his administration.

But experts say that report was flawed, and the same consulting firm which helped develop the nursing home policies also helped compile the report.

“It seems like the Department of Health is trying to justify what was an untenable policy,” University of California at San Fransisco nursing professor Charlene Harrington told the Associated Press at the time.

“They really need to own the fact that they made a mistake, that it was never right to send COVID patients into nursing homes and that people died because of it,” added California Association of Long Term Care Medicine President Dr. Michael Wasserman.

New York Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker appeared before the State Senate in a hearing on Cuomo’s handling of coronavirus on Monday, testifying that the study was indeed accurate.

“It seems, sir, that you are trying to do it one way so you can look better,” Democrat Sen. Gustavo Rivera replied.
