SPUC is standing in solidarity with Scottish MP, Dr Lisa Cameron who received a death threat after voting in accordance with her deeply held pro-life beliefs.

Michael Robinson, SPUC Director of Communications said: “Lisa is a valiant MP who has spoken out fearlessly in defence of unborn babies. Lisa needs our support and our thanks. As a society we must respect and defend freedom of conscience.”

SPUC presented a bouquet of white flowers to Dr Cameron on behalf of all its members. Mr Robinson said: “It was a privilege to give Dr Cameron this small token of SPUC’s gratitude and admiration for her courage in always voting according to her conscience on pro-life matters. SPUC’s symbol is a white flower; copied from the White Rose non-violent resistance movement in Nazi Germany.”

The death threat was sent just days after the SNP MP for East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow voted against a Bill that would have banned pro-life vigils outside abortion clinics. Dr Cameron called the police when she discovered the message on her Facebook account and officers are now in possession of the contents.

The vile note said that the sender planned to kill an elderly relative – whom Dr Cameron does not wish to identify – and referred to the MP as “ya fat slag”.

“Hatred and toxic aggression”

Dr Cameron said:  “I am concerned by the actions of those who have whipped up hatred and toxic aggression online in recent weeks following from my conscience votes on abortion and particularly distressed to have once again received a death threat towards my family.

“Unfortunately, it is becoming more difficult for Christians MPs to be able to vote on matters of conscience freely due to safety concerns, as freedom of religious belief appears to be being continually eroded.  This is currently a police matter and I would be grateful if people could respect my family’s privacy.”

Threats, abuse and cyberbullying

Michael Robinson, SPUC Director of Communications said he was appalled by the vitriol directed towards the MP.

Mr Robinson said: “Once again Dr Lisa Cameron MP has been targeted with hate and intolerance because of her deeply held belief that everyone deserves the right to life. It is especially despicable to target her through her family.

“Vilification is now routinely used as a tactic by pro-abortion advocates to crush debate and invite hateful attacks on those with a differing opinion. Those who believe in democracy need to expose the culprits responsible and defend genuine democratic values.”

SPUC is asking all those who acknowledge the importance of free speech and democratic values, to stand in solidarity with Dr Cameron by adding their names to the online thank you message. You can also include a personal message to Lisa.
