A police officer in the Philippines is facing charges for allegedly raping a student intern and then forcing her to abort her unborn baby.
The Philippine Star reports the Manila Police District filed the charges against former Barbosa police Captain Heherson Zambale on Thursday. Zambale’s wife, Aliah, and two women who allegedly did the forced abortion also are facing charges, the report states.
According to police, in March, Zambale allegedly raped a criminology student who was training for the police force in his precinct.
After learning that the young woman was pregnant, he allegedly forced her to take abortion drugs, police said. When they did not work, Zambale and his wife allegedly took the young woman to an illegal abortionist in Sampaloc for a second abortion, according to the report.
The Philippines protects unborn babies’ right to life. Abortion is illegal.
