The Trump administration continued to stand up for the rights of unborn babies this week when it rejected a United Nations aid plan that promotes abortions.

According to the pro-life organization C-Fam, which lobbies at the United Nations, the U.S. representatives to the UN refused to approve the UN agreement on global humanitarian assistance for the coronavirus and other emergencies because of the pro-abortion agenda within the plan.

“The United States cannot accept the terms ‘sexual and reproductive health care services’ and ‘sexual and reproductive health,’” the U.S. leaders said in a statement late Tuesday. “We emphasize that health care should focus on health promotion and prevention, consistent with national legislation and policies.”

The UN, World Health Organization and other global entities support abortions as “sexual and reproductive health care.” But the Trump administration has been pushing back against the notion that killing unborn babies is somehow necessary or essential.

“This is a great victory for pro-lifers around the world who are justifiably concerned that COVID funding would be used to promote abortion in humanitarian assistance,” C-Fam President Austin Ruse said. “We thank the Trump administration for taking this strong stance in favor of true humanitarian assistance and in favor of the unborn child.”

A few weeks earlier, the U.S. sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, slamming the UN’s pro-abortion agenda.

“The UN should not intimidate or coerce Member States that are committed to the right to life,” wrote U.S. Agency for International Development acting administrator John Barsa. “To use the COVID-19 pandemic as a justification to pressure governments to change their laws [on abortion] is an affront to the autonomy of each society to determine its own national policies on health care. The United States stands with nations that have pledged to protect the unborn.”

Barsa told the UN to stop “promoting abortion” as part of its global coronavirus work. He mentioned how the U.S. gave $3.5 billion to the UN in 2019.

He urged the UN to remove “sexual and reproductive health services” as priorities in its Global Humanitarian Response Plan COVID-19. And he criticized the UN for putting abortions “on the same level of importance as food-insecurity, essential health care, malnutrition, shelter, and sanitation.”

Barsa urged Guterres to remove the contentious issue from the plan and instead focus on “life-saving interventions” and the most urgent needs, such as food shortages.

America still gives huge amounts of money to the United Nations. However, Trump and his administration have been pushing back aggressively against the United Nations’ pro-abortion agenda, insisting that countries support women and children, born and unborn.

Beginning in 2017, Trump stopped giving American tax dollars to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) because it pushes abortions on other countries and has worked with China for decades to implement its forced abortion population control policies. The decision cut $32.5 million in funding from the UNFPA budget.
