A woman in India died along with her unborn baby earlier this month after taking abortion drugs at home, according to police.

The Mumbai Mirror reports police in Kashimira are investigating the death of the 32-year-old woman from Mira Road. The woman’s husband, in-laws and medical workers are being investigated, according to police.

A medical examination found that the woman died from excessive bleeding due to an overdose of abortion drugs, police said. She was about six weeks pregnant, according to the report.

The woman died May 2 after taking the abortion drugs at home, and her death initially was reported as “accidental,” according to the Times of India. However, police said their investigation revealed that the woman had experienced massive bleeding. They said they found a bloodstained bed-sheet and abortion drugs at the woman’s home.

Police are considering possible charges for providing abortion drugs without a valid prescription, the Free Press Journal reports.

The woman is survived by a 1-year-old daughter, according to the reports.

Abortions are legal throughout India. It is not clear why the woman may have sought to abort her unborn baby at home. Though reports do not suggest it, there is a possibility that she may have been forced or coerced into it.

The reports do not indicate what type of abortion drugs the woman took.

Still, at a time when abortion activists are pushing for at-home abortions and the de-regulation of abortion drugs in the U.S. and Europe, it is an important reminder that abortions are not safe for mothers or their unborn babies.

In the United States, the abortion drug mifepristone has been linked to at least 24 women’s deaths and 4,000 serious complications. Risks of mifepristone and misoprostol, the most common abortion drugs taken together to abort and then expel an unborn baby from the womb, include excessive bleeding, severe abdominal pain, infection and hemorrhage.

A 2009 study “Immediate Complications After Medical Compared With Surgical Termination of Pregnancy,” in Obstetrics and Gynecology found a complication rate of approximately 20% for the abortion drugs compared to 5.6% for surgical abortions. Hemorrhages and incomplete abortions were among the most common complications.

The drugs are used up to 10 weeks of pregnancy, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends that they be provided in-person by a licensed medical professional. In-person exams are important for dating the pregnancy; the abortion drugs do not work well later in pregnancy and potentially could lead to more complications. Exams also can detect ectopic pregnancies, which can be deadly on their own but especially so if the woman takes the abortion drugs.

Abortion activists claim abortion drugs are safe. They have been urging the FDA to end its restrictions on mifepristone and allow women to abort their unborn babies at home.

But doing so could have deadly consequences. Women do not need to abort their unborn babies to be healthy. Abortions are not “essential” or life-saving, they are life-destroying.
