Washington Post Falsely Claims Abortion Up to Birth Doesn’t Exist and Democrats Don’t Support It

The Washington Post has issued a so-called factcheck on President Donald Trump and late-term abortions that is, in and of itself, totally erroneous.

WaPo writer Salvador Rizzo takes issue with President Trump’s frequent statement at rallied that, “Virtually every Democrat candidate has declared their unlimited support for extreme late-term abortion, ripping babies straight from the mother’s womb, right up until the very moment of birth.”

Rizzo claims Trump’s statement is wrong because a small percentage of babies are killed in abortions up to birth.

“Most abortions are performed in the earlier stages of pregnancy. About 1 percent happen after the fetus reaches the point of viability. In short, the president is describing something that rarely happens,” he says.

The truth is late-term abortions, up to birth, do occur in the United States. While it’s true that most abortions happen prior to viability, data suggests thousands of late-term unborn babies still are legally aborted in the U.S. each year. The Guttmacher Institute, a pro-abortion research group considered to have the most comprehensive abortion numbers, reported an estimated 926,200 abortions in 2014. Just 1 percent of that total means more than 9,000 potentially viable late-term unborn babies were aborted that year.

Rizzo claims no Democrats support abortions up to birth.

But he admits in the factcheck, “Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), and some others who competed in the presidential primary, said they favored having no restrictions on abortion.” No limits on abortion allows late-term abortions to be done up to birth, making it clear they support late-term abortion just as the president said.

The Washington Post writer then claims Joe Biden doesn’t support abortions up to birth.

“Now, the only Democrat left in the race is former vice president Joe Biden, who does not take such a sweeping position. Biden supports abortion rights and says he would codify into statute the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in Roe v. Wade and related precedents,” he expanded.

But Roe v. Wade is modified by Doe v. Bolton, which allows abortions up to birth and Roe indicates abortions can remain legal for any reason up to birth unless states limit late-term abortions. States like new York, Illinois, Rhode Island, Vermont and many others allow abortions up to birth as permitted under Roe. by codifying Roe into law, Biden is specifically furthering the allowance of abortions up to birth, which again validates Trump’s statement.

Biden also has a lengthy record supporting abortion. From 2001 to 2008, Biden’s voting record on pro-life issues was close to zero, according to the National Right to Life Committee. In 2005, for example, he voted against the Mexico City Policy, which prohibits funding to overseas groups that promote and/or perform abortions. He also voted repeatedly to require that military service members’ abortions be covered by taxpayer dollars.

Biden’s own health care proposal he released last year is further evidence of his pro-abortion extremism. Biden now explicitly promises to “protect the constitutional right to an abortion” by repealing the Hyde Amendment and forcing taxpayers to fund the destruction of 60,000 innocent unborn children each year.

Biden has also pledged to weaponize the Justice Department against states to strike down popular pro-life laws — including bans on late-term abortions.

The statement that Democrats support abortions up to birth is true, no just from their rhetoric but their actual voting record. Democrat have repeatedly blocked or voted against a bill to ban abortions up to birth: on February 20, 2020, on January 29, 2018, and on September 22, 2015.

And in the House, Nancy Pelosi has blocked a bill 80 times to stop infanticide. Not once has Joe Biden and not once did any Democrat presidential candidate condemn her actions. Trump is actually understating the situation, as Democrats not only support abortions up to birth, they support abortions after birth.

The Washington Post quoted a pro-abortion professor who claimed, “‘Abortion until the moment of birth’ does not exist — it’s a boogeyman abortion opponents have created to frighten voters. Nobody ‘supports’ it, and nobody does it. No patient ever asks a physician to end her pregnancy ‘the moment before birth,’ and no physician would agree to do it.”

That is patently false.

One pro-life group literally called every abortion clinic in the country and found there are 143 surgical abortion facilities that will conduct abortions at 20 weeks or more. Eight of them agreed to kill a baby in an abortion after 28 weeks, up to birth, and THREE such abortion clinics are located blocks away from the Washington Post.

Those clinics include:

  • Boulder Abortion Clinic in Boulder, Colorado.
    • Stated limit: As high as needed.  Owner: Warren Hern.
  • Capital Women’s Services in Washington, D.C.
    • Stated limit: 36 weeks.  Stake Holder: Steven Chase Brigham.
  • CARE (Formerly AbortionClinics.org) in Bethesda, Maryland.
    • Stated limit: 35 weeks.  Owner: LeRoy Carhart.
  • Pro-Choice Center in Beverly Hills, California.
    • Stated limit: None.  Owner: Josepha Seletz.
  • Southwestern Women’s Options in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
    • Stated limit: None.  Owner: Curtis Boyd.
  • Washington Surgi-Clinic
    • Stated limit: 28 weeks.  Owner: Cesare Santangelo.
  • Women’s Med Center in Dayton, Ohio.
    • Stated limit: 22 weeks.  Owner: Martin Haskell.
  • DuPont Clinic, Washington, D.C.
    • Stated limit: None. Operators: Matthew Reaves, Stacey Rubin, & Jessica Kuperstock

Even the mainstream media admits abortions up to birth exists. New York Magazine featured the story of an Oregon woman who aborted her unborn baby at 28 weeks of pregnancy even though they both were healthy. Another woman admitted having an abortion at 35 weeks.

The truth is that abortions up to birth exists and thousands of babies, as President Trump explained, are killed in late-term abortions every year at abortion centers all across the United States.

Ultimately, President Trump’s statement is true: “Virtually every Democrat candidate has declared their unlimited support for extreme late-term abortion, ripping babies straight from the mother’s womb, right up until the very moment of birth.” And the Washington Post factcheck not only is false but the author admits babies are killed in late-term abortions up to birth and Democrats support the very Supreme Court decision allowing it.
