It appears that most abortion facilities in Moscow, Russia are not aborting unborn babies right now because of health care restrictions during the coronavirus pandemic.
More than 100,000 unborn babies and mothers could be spared from the pain and destruction of abortion if the news is true, according to a report in the Moscow Times.
Recently, Anna Rivina, an abortion activist with the No to Violence Center (Nasiliyu.net), called all 44 abortion facilities in the capital city to ask if they are still scheduling elective abortions, the report states. Only three said yes, Rivina said.
The others told Rivina that they only would do abortions in medical emergency cases, according to the report.
Her organization estimated the closures could mean 100,000 to 150,000 abortions may not happen.
Similar to many other countries, Russian leaders are restricting non-urgent medical procedures during the coronavirus crisis. Many doctors confirm that aborting an unborn baby is not “essential” or necessary health care.
However, as the Takie Dela news site reports, Moscow Department of Health officials denied closing abortion facilities after Rivina released her investigation. They said licensed medical facilities may continue to do abortions. It is not clear if some abortion facilities will resume their life-destroying practices in the coming days as a result of this statement.

Russia has some of the highest abortion numbers in the world. According to Johnston’s Archive, Russia reported 661,045 abortions in 2018. In 2013, the United Nations estimated that 53 of every 1,000 pregnancies in Russia end in abortion, the highest abortion rate in the world.
“Russia was the first country to legalize abortion, in 1920,” said Arevik Aivazova, the 40 Days for Life Moscow campaign coordinator, in 2013. “As a result, abortion still remains the primary method of family planning among most Russian women.”
Arevik said the official abortion numbers are much lower than the actual numbers because abortions in private clinics are not included.
The population of Russia is less than half than that of the United States, but its abortion numbers are nearly as high as those in the U.S. The Guttmacher Institute reported 862,320 abortions in 2017 in the U.S.
