Alabama Shuts Down Non-Essential Health Care, Allows Abortion Clinics to Keep Killing Babies

Three abortion facilities in Alabama continue to abort unborn babies despite a state-wide health order prohibiting non-essential healthcare during the coronavirus outbreak.

On Wednesday, the Birmingham News confirmed with Arrol Sheehan, director of public information at the Alabama Department of Public Health, that the abortion facilities are allowed to remain open, despite the order.

Though Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey and many state lawmakers are pro-life, somehow the state health department is claiming that abortion facilities are “essential businesses.”

Sheehan told the newspaper that no businesses are required to fully close at this time.

“Even in Jefferson County, where ‘non-essential’ businesses have been ordered closed, clinics in general are still open as essential,” he said.

One of the abortion facilities, West Alabama Women’s Center in Tuscaloosa, reported an influx of calls from Texas. Earlier this week, Texas leaders ordered abortion facilities to close along with other non-essential medical providers to preserve medical supplies and save lives from the coronavirus.

“We know that if women don’t receive this procedure legally, they will search out ways to have a termination,” abortion clinic manager Chad Jackson told the newspaper. “And what’s frightening is we know that those places lead to women trying to do it themselves at homes.”

But abortion activists have been openly promoting dangerous at-home abortions, too, and they are using the coronavirus crisis to demand that political leaders expand access to them through telemedicine.

Women do not need to abort their unborn babies to be healthy. To prevent maternal mortality, they need access to better health care, not abortions. Abortions kill unborn babies’ lives and put mothers at risk. Common abortion complications include infections, blood clots, hemorrhaging and an incomplete abortion where parts of the baby remain inside the mother’s womb. Abortion risks include future preterm births, breast cancer, suicide, anxiety/depression, and death. And it simply is not true that abortions are safer than childbirth.

Recently, medical groups representing more than 30,000 doctors in America emphasized that abortions are not “essential” or “urgent,” and abortion facilities that continue to operate during the pandemic are being “medically irresponsible.”
