Abortion Activists Trying to Defeat One of the Last Pro-Life Democrats in Congress

Tuesday will tell if one of the last pro-life Democrats in Congress remains in office.

U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, of Illinois, is facing a tough challenge in his state primary election. Though he is not conservative on most issues, Lipinski does support protections for unborn babies.

In contrast, his primary opponent Marie Newman is a pro-abortion extremist who has the support of Planned Parenthood, NARAL, EMILY’s List and George Soros’s group J Street, according to the Washington Free Beacon. She received endorsements from Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, too.

“Lipinski is liberals’ highest-profile 2020 primary target,” according to Politico. And the main reason is abortion.

The pro-life Democrat has served eight terms in Congress, and he has a strong pro-life voting record. In January, he was one of only two Democrats who signed an amicus brief calling on the U.S. Supreme Court to reconsider Roe v. Wade when it rules on a Louisiana abortion case later this year. He also was one of just three House Democrats who supported the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which would have prohibited abortions after 20 weeks when unborn babies can feel pain.

His pro-life record does not jive with an increasingly pro-abortion Democratic Party. The party platform boasts a radical abortion agenda that supports abortion on demand without limits. In 2012, Democrat leaders removed the word “rare” from their abortion platform, and, in 2016, added language calling for taxpayer-funded abortions.

To defeat Lipinski, pro-abortion groups have been dumping huge amounts of money into the race. According to the Free Beacon, they have spent at least $1.5 million. And as of February, Newman raised about $400,000 more than Lipinski, Politico reports.

“Lipinski is falling prey to a radical effort to shut out moderate pro-life voices,” Kristen Day, executive director of Democrats for Life of America, wrote at The Federalist. “In the long run, these tactics will lead to electoral suicide for the party—especially Democrat-leaning districts such as Lipinski’s, where a majority of the population leans pro-life.”

She said Newman accepted millions of dollars from pro-abortion groups and “imposed a one-question limit on reporters trying to figure out exactly how far her position on abortion goes.”

Meanwhile, the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List recently announced its support of Lipinski through digital ads, phone calls and mailers.

According to the Free Beacon, Lipinski’s district is heavily Catholic, and voters tend to vote Democrat but also be pro-life. Most Americans, including Catholics, oppose the increasingly radical abortion extremism of the Democratic Party.

Polls consistently show strong opposition to taxpayer-funded abortions and late-term abortions, both of which the Democratic Party supports. For example, a recent Gallup poll found that 60 percent of Americans want abortion legal “only in a few circumstances” (39 percent) or “illegal in all circumstances” (21 percent). A 2019 poll conducted by Marist University also found an overwhelming majority of Americans oppose taxpayer-funded abortions.

The Illinois primary election is still taking place. Other states may postpone their primary elections due to concerns about the corona virus, but Illinois has not.
